Cellphone Etiquette at Funerals

February 7, 2022
In today’s age, it can be tough to realize when our cellphone usage is becoming excessive. Due to their size and convenience, cellphones naturally travel with us wherever we go, even funerals. If you or someone you know finds yourself at a funeral service, there are best practices to maintain in regard to our cellphone usage. Since funerals are generally solemn occasions that require attention and respect, you’ll want to minimize, if not completely eliminate any and all texting or calls. Our funeral home in McAllen, TX is more than happy to help you in any way that you need. Reach out today with any questions! Phone Volume When preparing to attend a funeral service , it is absolutely essential that you ensure that your phone is either turned off or on silent. There is little else more disrespectful than a cellphone going off in the middle of a service. To be safe, we advise against even putting your phone on vibrate as this can still possibly disturb the service, especially during a moment of silence. In our opinion, it is always best to play it safe and either shut your cellphone down completely or make sure it is on silent mode. If you absolutely must require your phone to be on in case of an emergency, then we recommend that you walk out of the service periodically to check it. Be sure to not exit during the eulogy, however, because that can also be viewed as a sign of great disrespect. Reconnecting Oftentimes, funerals are occasions in which we reconnect with old family and friends that we may have not spoken to in some time. If you would like to exchange contact information, be sure to do this quietly before the service, and if you find yourselves in the viewing room, we recommend stepping out when exchanging contact information. Be sure not to take your phone out during the service though! Photos/Video When attending a funeral service, you’ll want to steer clear from taking any photographs or video, unless you are specifically asked. Many people in this digital age are quick to add everything onto social media, however, when a funeral is involved, it is always best to leave your phone in your pocket. If you do want to make a post about the funeral, either do it before the service or once you are home, but do not include any pictures or videos as this can be viewed as a sign of disrespect. Young Children and Cellphone It is common today to see parents handing their children their own cellphone as a way of keeping them quiet for certain occasions. However, at a funeral service, this is an absolute no-no. If your child is unable to sit down quietly for the service, then you may want to reconsider bringing them. The last thing anyone wants to see is a child absorbed in a cellphone during a funeral service. Use this moment to teach your child about the importance of respect and solemnity at these types of services. When looking for a funeral home in McAllen, TX we are only a phone call away!
