Acting Like Everything Is Normal
One of the biggest mistakes that we see parents make when their children are going through grief is to act as though everything is normal. Truthfully, nothing about grief is normal at all, so it’s important that we avoid treating things like they are. While you certainly do not want to make your child feel any worse, it’s important to stay realistic about the situation at hand. To avoid falling into this trap that most parents find themselves in, we suggest staying as involved as possible while your child deals with their emotions. This means that you should stay in constant and open communication with your child by offering you support and encouraging conversation whenever they are ready. Let them know that you are there for them if they ever wish to talk about the subject, and if they aren’t ready, that is completely okay as well.
