Comforting a Child

May 16, 2022
Grief is difficult enough, so when a child is the one going through the pain of these emotions it can be a tough situation to be in. If your child is newly experiencing grief, you could be thinking a million things at once. Fortunately, there are pretty basic rules to follow when attempting to comfort a child through their grief. Below, we are going to discuss all of the things parents should try to avoid when trying to comfort their children. Read on to learn all about it. Our funeral home in Alamo, TX is always open and ready to work with all who walk through our doors. If interested, give us a call or stop by with any questions or concerns you may have.

Things to Avoid

Acting Like Everything Is Normal

One of the biggest mistakes that we see parents make when their children are going through grief is to act as though everything is normal. Truthfully, nothing about grief is normal at all, so it’s important that we avoid treating things like they are. While you certainly do not want to make your child feel any worse, it’s important to stay realistic about the situation at hand. To avoid falling into this trap that most parents find themselves in, we suggest staying as involved as possible while your child deals with their emotions. This means that you should stay in constant and open communication with your child by offering you support and encouraging conversation whenever they are ready. Let them know that you are there for them if they ever wish to talk about the subject, and if they aren’t ready, that is completely okay as well. While it’s important to be readily available for your child, it’s also important to give them the space they ask for and need when processing their emotions.

Not Talking About Hard Subjects

We understand that the thought of having the “death conversation” with your child can be scary, but it’s absolutely vital that it does not go ignored. Death is a natural part of life, and it is something that your child will learn about sooner or later, so it’s a good idea to take advantage of this difficult time and use it as a learning opportunity. If you are still uncomfortable with broaching the topic of death to your child, just ask yourself whether you’d rather them learn about it from someone outside of the home rather than from someone they love and trust, such as yourself. This should be reason enough to put your feelings aside and make sure that they are as informed as possible. This does not mean that you must overshare, but you should be willing to answer as many questions as they have about the matter.

Not Allowing Emotions

Another mistake that some parents make is to avoid showing any emotions. Our emotions are how we deal with difficult things in life, and by avoiding showing your own emotions in front of your child, you are demonstrating to them, without even realizing it, that emotions are not okay and must be bottled up inside. Doing so is extremely harmful and can have long-lasting effects if not corrected. You should allow your child to express themselves however they wish and do the same for yourself as well. Doing so will demonstrate what it means to cope healthily. Learn more about our funeral home in Alamo, TX!
