MERCEDES, TX - Abel Josue Ramirez, 61, was called to be with His Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 in Houston, Texas after battling a lengthy illness. At the time of his passing, Abel was surrounded by his family and passed peacefully in his sleep. Abel was born in Edinburg on August 22, 1955. The youngest of seven children, Abel had a full and happy life growing up east of Edinburg in the quiet farming community of La Blanca, Texas. He attended Roosevelt Cottage with the Edinburg School District and received his certificate of completion in 1976. Abel was employed at the University of Texas at Austin in their food service division and he was very proud of this. Throughout his wonderful life, Abel blessed everyone he had the fortune to meet. With his infectious smile and love of life, Abel shared his widespread joy with the world. Growing up in a Christian home, Abel developed a great appreciation for the Church and had a deep-rooted relationship with God. His greatest joy was serving in the church, singing praises, and raising his hands as he worshiped the Lord. Abel was a volunteer at many churches including many in Bastrop and the Woodlands, Texas. Since the passing of his parents, each of Abel's siblings had the joy of having their precious brother living in their homes. Abel's life profoundly and positively impacted the lives of his entire family. He will forever be remembered as kind, polite, affectionate, and joyous. Abel is preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Alicia Ramirez; and niece, Lora Lisa Ramirez. He is survived by his sisters, Lilia Cantu, Alicia Longoria, Hilda Ramirez, and Sylvia Ramirez; brothers, Juan Ramirez (Rebecca) and Ramiro Ramirez (Melinda); ten nieces and three nephews; and 24 great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 6pm-8pm on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at McCaleb Funeral Home, 900 West 4th St. in Weslaco, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church, 705 East University Drive, in Edinburg, Texas. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park, 6705 North FM 88, Weslaco, Texas. Pallbearers will be Juan Ramirez, Aaron Saenz, John Young, Joe Rodriguez, Ramon Cantu, and Kevin Powell. Funeral arrangements are under the care of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.
