PROGRESO - Alicia H. Gamez, 53, passed away on Friday, April 22, 2016 in Progreso, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Alicia was born in Weslaco on January 6th, 1963 to Jesus and Maria Hernandez. She had two sisters, Carmen and Lydia and one brother, Jesus "Tino" Hernandez. They grew up in Weslaco and had many special memories. As a child, they would get $5.00 per month to split among the siblings and they remember walking to the store and splitting bag of chips and bean dip. She was so naturally crafty and this started very young when they would play dolls and Alicia would always make the most beautiful dresses for her "barbies".
Alicia met Lupe in high school and they were soulmates. She graduated from Weslaco High School in 1981.
She and Lupe spent most of their time together. They worked very hard, spending some summers in Nebraska where they were married in 1982. They also would spend summers in Iowa, but eventually made their home Progreso, where they raised their three children, Pablo, Denise and Danielle.
Many will remember Alicia from her 32 year career at Weslaco ISD, where she had just retired in January. She spent most of this time at Rico Elementary where her kind-hearted, gentle spirit would delightfully and quietly greet you in the library.
Alicia loved to read, one of the many reasons she became a librarian. She also took the time during her full time employment to earn her associates degree.
She was also very creative and had an eye for decorating. She was a great interior designer and this was one of her many hobbies. She loved crafts and just creating the most precious and unique decorations. She loved to make shoes, dresses and jewelry. She could spend all day in Hobby Lobby and Michael's.
Alicia, like many women, loved to shop. She spent a lot of time shopping with her girls. She had a knack for finding a great deal and one of her favorite treasure hunts was JC Penny.
Above all, Alicia was a loving and devoted wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and Catholic. She loved the Lord with all of her heart and she was devoted to her family. She cared for her parents as they both became elderly. She loved and cared for her husband. She was a wonderful mother, always placing the needs of her children and grandchildren ahead of her own. She was, most importantly, dedicated and devoted to Christ.
Alicia is preceded in death by her mom, Maria Hernandez. She is survived by her father, Jesus Hernandez Sr., the love of her life, Guadalupe Gamez Jr., her children Danielle Gamez, Denise Gamez, and Pablo Gamez and his wife, Elizabeth, her grandchildren, Pablo, Debanhi, Joel Dominik and Malerie, her sisters, Carmen McArdle (Michael), and Lydia (John) Thompson, and her brother Jesus "Tino" Hernandez Jr., and numerous nephews and nieces.
Alicia will always be remembered at Weslaco ISD and by the community and those lives she touched as a beautiful, kind, gentle spirit.
Arrangements are under the care of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.
