Weslaco/Raymondville: Saturday, November 28, 2015, Heaven gained another angel, Bernabe “Benny” Contreras, 76, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 28th, 2015. He is reunited with his parents, Anestacio and Guadalupe Rodriguez Contreras and his loving wife, Maria “Neche” Contreras of 54 years who Benny dearly missed.
Benny is survived by his two sons, Andy (Rebecca Abeyta) Contreras and Bernabe Jr. “Beaver” Contreras, his grandson, Andrew (Vanessa), his granddaughter, Amanda and his great grandchildren, Ava, Aaron and Ryan and his sister Aurora (Abelardo "Lalo") Quintanilla.
Benny grew up in Raymondville. He went off to play college football. Around this time there was a stop in Bay City that would change his life forever, he met his soulmate, Maria Inez. He would soon return to Raymondville where he opened up a small bar. This required long hours and was not conducive to raising a family, so he decided to get a job at the Highway Department where he would spend his thirty-five-year career. He and Neche moved to Weslaco where they would raise their family and meet life- long friends. Benny always had an entrepreneurial spirit and was very driven to succeed. He worked hard, long hours so that his wife was able to stay home with the kids. After his retirement, Benny dabbled in landscaping and other odd jobs. He wasn’t one to sit at home, he had to be out doing something and that usually involved some type of work. Benny was a great provider.
Benny was a delight to be around, always had a sense of humor, even when he was ill. He just couldn’t’ go without bringing a smile to everyone’s face. He was a joker, sometimes you couldn’t tell if he was joking or telling the truth. One truth was, he did love to watch football, but not the Cowboys, he loved the Patriots.
His love in life was his family and friends. He always talked about his kids and grandkids. He also loved spending time with his sister and his good friends. Benny is gone from this life on Earth, but he will always be remembered and surely missed.
