Weslaco/Grand Prairie- Bertha Garcia, 91, passed away on April 24th, 2024, at her daughter's home in Grand Prairie, leaving behind a legacy of profound love and dedication to God, the church, and her family. Born in Mexico to Gaspar and Juana (Serna) Lechuga on August 21st, 1932.
Bertha met her future husband, Virgilio Garcia, while working at her father's meat market in Mexico. Bertha was friends with Virgilio's sister, Maria. Bertha and Virgilio fell in love and were married in 1961. They came to the United States and raised their five children in Weslaco. Virgilio was a hard worker and a great provider. He insisted on Bertha being a homemaker while he worked to support his family.
Bertha's influence extended far beyond her family. She was the heart and soul of her household also caring for her chickens and roosters. Ensuring her family always had fresh eggs and delicious meals, made with love. Her food and hospitality was enjoyed by her nuclear and extended family. Some of the favorites were fideo, tamales, molé, and menudo.
A disciplinarian at heart, Bertha instilled values of respect and integrity in her children. Setting such high standards helped shape their characters. Despite being firm in her expectations, her children and grandchildren knew that everything she did was with love.
Bertha's faith was the cornerstone of her life. As a devout Pentecostal, she dedicated much time to attending church and volunteering. She looked forward to Bible Study every Friday evening. Her deep connection to God was evident in how she lived and interacted with others.
In addition to her culinary skills and faithfulness, Bertha found joy in the simpler things in life. She adored cats, collecting cat figurines, and precious moments angels. Shopping for a new dress for church was a cherished activity she enjoyed sharing with her daughters. Bertha also enjoyed moments at South Padre Island, treasured visits to Grand Prairie to see her kids, and vacationed at Arkansas Natural Life Park.
Though she may have left this world physically, Bertha's legacy of kindness, caring, friendliness, and hospitality will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Bertha Garcia is preceded in death by her parents, Gaspar and Juana Luchuga, her loving husband, Virgilio Garcia Sr., and her son, Efrain Garcia.
She is survived by her children, Raymundo Garcia (Maria Victoria), Javier Garcia (Eunice), Adriana Sanchez (Francisco), Marina Castro (Francisco), and Virgilio Garcia Jr. (Maria Guadalupe), grandchildren, Belem Gonzalez (Frank), Orlando Garcia (Taylor), Coraima Cardenas (Erik), Janet Garcia, Marlyn Garcia, Gabriella Daspit (Raymond), Efrain Sanchez, Briza Rebollar (Robert), Adriana Gonzalez, Isamar Castro, Ezequiel Castro, Moises Castro, Yulizza Castro, Hugo Garcia (Nuris), Marisol Garfias (Marco), Virgilio Garcia III, Angel Garcia, and Carolina Garcia, great-grandchildren, Jayden, Sebastian, Adaline, Ray Luka, Nayeli Jette, Camila, Guillermo, and Andrea.
Visitation will be on Monday, April 29, from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a Prayer Service from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, April 30, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at McCaleb Funeral Home before moving to the Celebration of Life event at The Pentecostal Church at Noon. Finally, Bertha will be laid to rest at Anahuac Community Cemetery in Edcouch at 4:00 PM.
