Alamo: Celina "Nina" Sanchez passed away at her home in Alamo on Tuesday, November 29th, 2022. Celina was born to Daniel Hernandez and Ernestina (Ramirez) Hernandez on June 11th, 1946, in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Nina met her soulmate, Antonio, around 1965. This encounter happened while Nina was working at a Mercado in Tampico. Antonio was waiting for a woman at the Mercado and delivering bread. When an acquaintance stopped by and asked what he was doing, he replied that he was waiting for his girlfriend (which was a lie because he just wanted the man to leave). Shortly after, Nina walked by, and Antonio said to the man, "There she is." But he had never met her before. So Antonio and Nina started talking, and soon after, they were dating. In 1968, Antonio moved to Chicago, and Nina soon followed.
Antonio and Nina spent the rest of their lives together. Nina worked as a Kindergarten Teacher's Assistant at Our Lady of Grace Catholic School in Chicago. She and Antonio both retired in 2008. They found their way to the warmer climate of the Rio Grande Valley in 2009, spending the rest of their lives in Alamo, Texas.
Nina enjoyed crafting, sewing, and crocheting. She loved being around all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family time was very important to her.
Nina was a devout Catholic, and her faith was a crucial part of her life. Nina made sure to instill her unwavering faith in her children.
Nina is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Ernestina Hernandez. She is survived by her husband, Antonio Sanchez Sr., children Maria (Sanchez) Vargas (Romon), Antonio Sanchez Jr, and Bernardo Sanchez (Renee), siblings, Maria Eugenia Andaverde and Daniel Hernandez, ten grandchildren; Alyssa, Jose, JoeyAnthony, Nicole, Samantha, Cassandra, Jocelyn, Joshua, Andres, and Paige eight great-grandchildren, Angelo, Leira, Anais, Josiah, Ethan, Logan, Sophia, and Nathaniel.
Visitation will be Friday, December 2nd, 1-9 pm, with a blessing and rosary at 7 pm at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.
