Cristina Elvira Gonzalez

April 5, 1986 — January 24, 2020

Cristina Elvira Gonzalez (33), of Weslaco Tx. passed away on Friday, January 24th, 2020 at her home in Weslaco, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on April 5, 1986, in Weslaco, Tx. at Knapp Hospital.

In 1977, Mr. Gonzalez married Suvelda in Weslaco, Tx. Mr. Gonzalez is an HEB employee and Mrs. Gonzalez works as a Home Health Provider in Weslaco Tx.

At age ten, I was diagnosed with diabetes. Then a couple of years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. One of the few advantages of dying from Cancer is that you have time to write your own obituary with the help of your family. (The other advantages are no longer bothering with things that are unimportant and no longer worrying)

Today, our sister “Cris” has passed away. She will be given a celebration of her mortal life and a rebirth into the infinite source of light. Today, she will leave behind the painful emotions of Earth. And we will cherish her memory throughout our existence until we are once again reunited with her.

She was born into a family of four: Alfredo Gonzalez Jr. (Father), Suvelda Gonzalez (Mother), Alfredo Gonzalez III (Brother), Jaime Gonzalez (Brother).

Throughout her life, Cristina had a special love for animals. As a young child, Cris developed a unique gift of caring for animals who needed rescuing. Her love for animals began when she rescued a stray golden retriever at the age of five. She dedicated her life to nurturing them back to health. As she grew up, Cris was passionate, caring, and thoughtful about her love of animals. In high school, she thrived in FFA (Future Farmers of Americas), where she trained a goat for the Livestock Show in Mercedes, Texas.

Cris had a lifelong passion for reading and movies. Her closest friends would describe her as a movie critic. Cris was brilliant in her own unique way. Regrettably, her mental health impairment was a massive barrier for her. Even though she had these difficulties, she never apologized for being herself. With loving support, her mother helped her cope with her disabilities.

In 2012, Cris was able to express to her mother how much she loved her in a beautifully written note. This was an epic moment for her mother, Suvelda, for many reasons. She knew Cris was very expressive in her own unique style, often using artwork. Suvelda understood her daughter and realized that no matter the circumstances, Cris was strong and capable of enduring even the most horrible of diseases, cancer.

Cristina, had a heart of gold and will always be remembered for her generosity. She had an innocent smile that would light up a room and a cheerful and fun personality.

Cristina is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Alfredo Sr. and Cristina M. Gonzalez and maternal grandparents, Prudencio Salinas and Elvira Garza.

She is survived by her parents, Alfredo Jr. & Suvelda Gonzalez, best friend, Cristina Hyde & Family (Austin, Evan, Elijah), brothers, Jaime Gonzalez (J.J.) of Weslaco, Alfredo III “Fred” Gonzalez (Amy) of Weslaco, nephew, Noah Gonzalez, and nieces, Kylie, Genisys, Clarissa, and Celinda Gonzalez.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 26th, 1-9 pm, with a rosary at 7 pm. Mass will be celebrated on Monday, St. Joan of Arc of Weslaco, 10 am, officiated by Father Francisco Solis. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.
