David Gonzalez Lopez, 69, peacefully entered into eternal rest surrounded by his loving
family on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.
David was born on November 10, 1954, to Alonzo and Maria Lopez in Mercedes, Texas
and raised alongside his older brother and younger sister. He graduated from Mercedes
High School in 1973 and attended two years of college at Pan American University. For
the majority of his career, he served as a construction foreman and later became a
Senior Director of Public Works for the City of Mercedes. His professional journey was a
testament to his dedication and hard work.
His passions extended beyond the workplace. David loved gambling with his wife,
Janny, where they enjoyed testing their luck at casinos. A dedicated sports fan, David
had a special place in his heart for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Astros.
David’s proudest accomplishments were his roles as a father and grandfather. He
cherished every minute he spent with his daughters and grandchildren. They were his
pride and joy.
David is proceeded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Maria Lopez; his father and
mother-in-law, Jimmy and Cora Closner; his grandson Mason Jude Garza; and nephew
James “JR” Closner.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 47 years, Janny and three daughters, Anna (Mark)
Almazan, Lisa Lopez, Cristina (Miguel) Garza; seven grandchildren, Nicholas and Sofia
Almazan, Carlos, Jake, Abbie, Caleb and Aiden McVey; brother, Albert Lopez; and
sister, Giovanna (Robert) Scott. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
The services to honor and celebrate David Lopez’s life will be held on Friday, June 7,
2024, from 4-9 pm, with a rosary at 7 pm at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco, TX..
Mass will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 10 am at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic
Church in Mercedes, TX before David is laid to rest at Highland Memorial Park in
Weslaco, TX.
David’s legacy of love, laughter, and guidance will forever resonate within the hearts of
those who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence will be greatly missed. May
he rest in peace.
