WESLACO - Douglas F. Brundige, age 79, was called home to be with our Lord on February 6, 2016 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. We were blessed to have two and a half years after the diagnosis and for the most part he felt good and was able to continue the things he loved.
Doug was born on February 17, 1936 in Granger, Texas to his parents, Vernod and Leighton Brundige. He graduated from Granger High School, attended North Texas University in Denton, Texas before graduating from Barber College in Austin, Texas. He married a Weslaco girl, Mary Ann McKee and they had a long, wonderful life together. They raised 3 children. He loved his family and was so proud of his children and grandchildren.
After graduating from Barber college, he moved to Weslaco, and started working at John Petty’s Barber Shop on Fourth Street. Upon John Petty’s retirement, Doug purchased the Barber shop. When the Best Western Palm Aire opened, he moved the shop to the new location with a new name: “Doug’s Hair Fashions” and continued until he retired in April, 2013.
Doug loved life and being with people and over the 50 plus years of barbering, he made many friends and in many cases, cut 3 generations of hair.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Weslaco. During his younger years, he was a member of Weslaco Chamber of Commerce Board and served as president 1 year. He was also a member of the Lion’s Club and Jaycees. He coached Little League baseball several years with a winning team a couple of years. He also coached the Little League All Star Team one year.
Doug was an avid sports fan and participant. He played football in high school, then tennis as a young adult at which he excelled. He also did some fishing along the way. He later switched from tennis and to racquet ball in which he became very competitive. As he grew older, and later retired, golf became his choice. As in every other sport he engaged in, he strived to be the best he could. He loved golf and his golfing buddies.
We wish to thank all of the Church members, friends and family for their prayers, calls and visits. It was very uplifting to Doug.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents: Vernod and Leighton Brundige. Doug is survived by his wife: Mary Ann Brundige; 3 children: Doug C. Brundige (Donna), Melissa Eberle, and Brandt Brundige (Nicole); 4 grandchildren: Tara Piper, Amanda Brundige, Hunter Eberle and Addison Brundige; 2 great- grandchildren: Leighton Eberle and Phoenix Eberle; a sister: Eloise (Joe) Freeman of Ft. Worth.
