WESLACO - WESLACO - Elia C. Gomez, 83, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, February 9th. Elia was born to Higinio and Paula Campos on January 1st, 1934 in Weslaco. She attended school in Weslaco and graduated from Weslaco High. She worked for the City of Weslaco while attending Pan American where she earned her bachelors degree. Elia would meet her soulmate in 1958 at the 77 Bowling Alley in Harlingen. She and her friends showed up to bowl and all of the lanes were taken, so David's group of gentlemen, happily offered to share. The rest is history, they were married on November 25th, 1960. They would enjoy a beautiful life together and they settled in Weslaco where they raised their family, daughters, Tirza and Elvia, and son, David. Many will remember Elia as a teacher. She taught elementary school in Weslaco for many years and later Donna, where she retired in 2000. Elia loved to go to her sons baseball games when he was young. She also loved to watch her basketball games and was die hard Lakers fan. She was a bit of a gambler and loved to buy lottery tickets. Elia will most be remembered by her giving and caring nature and her love for her grandchildren. She really and truly lived for her grandchildren and spent most of her time with them. They were the light of her life. Elia was preceded in death by her parents, Higinio and Paula Campos and her daughter, Tirza L Garcia, who passed away in 2007. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, David Sr., her son, David Gomez Jr. and his wife, Veronica Gomez, of Weslaco, her daughter, Elvia Gomez of Weslaco, her grandsons, Justin P. Gomez and Jacob F. Gomez, her granddaughters, Jocelyn R. Gomez and Linda L. Gomez, her brothers, Gene Campos (Berta) and Roland Miller (Pearl), her sisters, Elvia Martinez (Joe), Eva Corona (Ramiro ), Elisia Gracia (Carlos ), and Elida Peña (Martin ), and numerous nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 12th, from 3-9pm at McCaleb Chapel, with a rosary at 7pm. Mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 13th, at St. Joan of Arc at 10am, preceded by Father Francisco Solis Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Justin Gomez, Jacob Gomez, Ronald Miller, Randy Miller, Joe Peña, and Carlos Martinez.
