Elizabeth Doyle

June 13, 1921 — September 7, 2015

WESLACO - Elizabeth Rose (Welch) Doyle was born on June 13, 1921, in Humboldt, Tennessee, to James and Rosebud Welch, the second of seven children. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 7, 2015, where she joins her husband, mother, father, and six of her siblings. She was a strong woman of faith all her life.

Elizabeth moved with her family to the Rio Grande Valley in 1928, with the family planning to farm in the Valley. Part of the family lore is that the trip from Tennessee to the Valley included a horse-drawn wagon. The Great Depression crushed the plans to farm with the loss of the family’s land, but the family persevered through the difficult times with faith in the Lord and hard work. Elizabeth always shared in that hard work.

Elizabeth became a rock polished to a brilliant finish by the struggles of her life. She set an example for her brothers, sister, and many nieces and nephews, and her life helped define the Welch family work ethic. After graduating from high school in Pharr, Texas, she left the Valley for San Antonio, where she attended Draughons Business College to study secretarial skills and bookkeeping. She quickly found work with Charles Daubert of the Daubert Oil and Gas Company. Her career included employment with W.B. Osborn, Calvin R. Bentsen of Bentsen-Whittington Oil Company, and the Lightning Oil Company. Elizabeth mastered the calculation and disbursement of oil and gas royalties, the management of oil and gas contracts and contractors, all the intricacies of bookkeeping in this area, and the filing of reports with various governmental agencies. She was a business person of integrity and competence, and you could always trust her to get the job done right.

But Elizabeth was most treasured by her family for the love she dispensed to all. She was always supportive of her siblings through their shared struggles, and inspired them, as well as her nieces and nephews, to pursue higher education. Though she never obtained a college degree, she studied business law, oil and gas law, and Spanish, and took a computer science class at South Texas Community College at the age of 79! She read voraciously and could discuss current world events with the best. More importantly, she always offered an encouraging word, or wrote an uplifting note or letter, or provided a timely meal at Earl Abel’s or La Fonda to her nieces and nephews, and to her many friends. Elizabeth was the perfect aunt and friend. She was loved and will be loved forever.

Elizabeth is survived by her brother, William H. Welch, his wife, Marianne Welch, the spouses of her siblings, Joy Welch and Peggy Welch, many nieces, nephews, and their extended families. She will be missed by all. Elizabeth will be interred with her beloved husband, Ray, in Sunset Memorial Gardens in San Antonio, Texas. Private memorial services will be held in San Antonio, Texas.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.
