Donna- Esperanza Herrera, 88, passed away at her home on Monday, September 16, 2019. Esperanza was born on January 24, 1931, to Leandro Herrera and Maria Granados in Coahuila, Mexico where she grew up with two older brothers.
After Esperanza married and had nine children, she became a homemaker, raising the children and making sure the house was in order. Esperanza was an ideal homemaker; she loved cooking, sewing, and making all kinds of crafts. She also had a beautiful yard and thoroughly enjoyed caring for her plants and flowers, especially her roses.
Esperanza not only cared for her children and grandchildren, but the care encompassed any of their friends. She treated them all like her own. Esperanza was very social and enjoyed having a full house of family and friends. Her home was always welcoming and full of love and warmth. Esperanza occasionally enjoyed a quiet visit over coffee with a special friend. Many times, she had a houseful of people enjoying her famous Menudo. Either way, there was never a dull moment at grandma's house, and Esperanza enjoyed every bit of it. She was also very generous and crafty, so she was continually giving beautiful handmade coronas to those who had lost a loved one. Esperanza loved to go shopping and especially the time shared with her daughters and granddaughters during those treasured days. It was a bonus if she was able to pick up a real bargain at a local garage sale.
Although Esperanza was fun and loving, she was also very stern and ever the disciplinarian. In the midst of the "no's," which at times didn't seem fair, it was always apparent that grandma/mom was disciplining out of love.
She loved all of her nine children and was always excited when they would stop by.
Esperanza is preceded in death by her parents, Leandro and Maria Herrera, her son, Ruben Hernandez, and brothers, Ignacio Herrera, and Zacharias Herrera.
Esperanza is survived by her children, Sergio Hernandez (Consuelo) of Ft. Worth, Elva Flores (Jose) of Indiana, Homero Hernandez (Doris) of Ft. Worth, Sandra Alfaro of Weslaco, Diana Valdez (Salvador) of Donna, Jaime Hernandez of Weslaco, Guadalupe Hernandez of Mexico, and Ivan Hernandez (Adrianna) of Donna, 31 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 18, from 2-9pm with a prayer service at 7 pm. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 19, 10 am, at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Weslaco City Cemetery.
