Weslaco: Eufemia A. Vargas, 91, passed away at her home on Sunday, December 5, 2021. On March 20, 1930, Eufemia was born to Victoriano Alanis and Mercedes Gonzales in San Diego, Texas. She grew up in Weslaco with six siblings. Eufemia worked as a migrant when she was young. She also worked in the restaurant industry as a young adult, but once Eufemia had children, she became a homemaker and earned extra money by babysitting.
Eufemia had six children, Arturo, Onofre, Esmeralda, George, Petra, Diana, and her beloved pets, who she treated like children. Eufemia was a great homemaker, always putting others before herself. In addition, she was an excellent cook. Eufemia's meals were made with lots of love, delicious and memorable. Eufemia also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting, but family gatherings were the most important events.
Eufemia enjoyed playing bingo, Loteria, and buying scratch-offs. She played Loteria every Sunday. She loved food and family. Eufemia had a witty sense of humor and was tough enough to handle anything life could throw at her.
Eufemia was also a Christian woman who believed in the power of prayer. She prayed daily for her children and read the Bible and Christian devotionals. Eufemia’s relationship with Christ became stronger over time, and so did her faith. She grew in wisdom and always had encouraging words for her children and grandchildren.
