Evelyn Holland

July 30, 1936 — October 7, 2015

MERCEDES – Born Evelyn Claire Onderdonk and raised in Mercedes, Texas with 11 siblings and a former Mercedes Lady Tiger basketball player, she married her brother Buddy’s country band fiddler Jack Charles Holland, her soul mate and a love that lasted 59 years.

A loving wife and wonderful mother of two children Jack Charles and Jill Marie…. Oh yea…She had a sense of humor. Weather she was fishing the canals and ditches with Jack, to touching up Jill’s make-up or perfecting a hair curl for a pageant, Evelyn always strived to live life as large and joyful possible…this was Evelyn.

The Family overnight fishing/camping trips, she loved the outdoors, a rum n coke ad a popping cork and a shrimp. A simple walk on the beach at South Padre was all she needed from time to time. A morning walk in the yard with a hot cup of coffee, smelling her roses, or listening to the waterfall…loving life’s little treasures…this was Evelyn.

She worked at HEB for 15 years and loved every minute of it. That was a second family. She greeted everyone with a warm smile and she never saw an unfamiliar face. From her award winning pumpkin cake, to her holiday costumes, Evelyn was quite often the love of party and touched the hearts of many. She was everyone’s “grandma”…this was Evelyn.

She was a loving grandmother to Samantha, Emily, Lil Evelyn, Abby and Lil Jack always making sure that had everything they needed…this was Evelyn.

She battle cancer until the very end even though it was tough, you never saw her without a smile on her face. A dreaded disease that for all we know about it, we know nothing it seems. Evelyn was taken from us far too soon but lives on in her family, in our hearts and in our memories…forever…this was our Evelyn!!

She is preceded in death by her parents Bill & Evelyn Onderdonk, sisters Marjorie Fiveash, Charlotte English, Billy Jean Maloy, Sarah Jane Carothers and her brothers John, Buddy Onderdonk.

She is survived by her husband Jack Charles Holland Sr, son Jack Charles Holland Jr., daughter Jill Marie Holland Zamora, granddaughters Samantha Holland, Evelyn Holland Emily Zamora and Abigail Zamora, grandson Jack Charles Holland III, sister Mary Ann Dickey, and brothers Ernest, Bobby, Dan, and Larry Onderdonk.
