Donna- Federico “Fred” Handy Sr, 61, passed away suddenly on Saturday, November 19th, 2022, at DHR Hospital in Edinburg. Fred was born on January 16th, 1961, to Alejandro and Francisca (Matamoros) Handy in Donna, Texas.
Fred grew up in Donna. During high school, he took shop classes and learned about mechanics. Fred was mechanically inclined and also loved working on cars. After high school, he went to work for Carpenter’s garage, where he continued to hone his mechanical skills. Eventually, Fred opened his own repair shop, Handy’s garage, working for himself for the rest of his life.
Also, shortly after high school, Fred met his future wife, Sylvia Gonzales, at a local carnival. They were married on May 2nd, 1981, and spent the rest of their lives together. Fred and Sylvia had raised three children, and Fred was a true family man. He was perfectly content hanging out at the house with his wife and kids. He often invited friends to watch a football game and barbecue, but home was his comfort zone.
Fred never grew tired or bored with his chosen career. Instead, he taught his son, Freddy, some of the tricks of the trade. They shared the passion and love for fixing any old car or truck they could get their hands on. Fred also enjoyed watching roosters on occasion.
Fred’s outgoing and fun personality was the life of any party. He was the first person to offer a helping hand when someone was in need. Fred always worked hard to provide for his wife, children, grandchildren, and others.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Alejandro and Francisca Handy, and brothers, Alejandro Handy Jr. and Federico Handy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia; children, Freddy Handy (Aurora), Sonya Handy (Jesse), and Selina Handy; siblings, Israel Sagredo (Eva), Rogelio Sagredo (Yolanda), Eloy Handy (Molly), Ernesto Handy, Belia (Joe)Garza, and Lydia Ochoa, grandchildren, Cain, Devin, Julissa, Romeo, Deziree, Rico, Andrew, and Yeshua, great-grandchild, Lorenzo Handy, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Fred was taken too soon but will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and love.
John 16:22: So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again, and you will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away.
