Fernando Lopez Sr., 63, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at DHR in Edinburg. Fernando was born on April 5, 1958, to Fernando and Sara Beltran Lopez in Mexico. He grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he was an active tennis player. Fernando was also involved in “shop” and was most passionate about bodywork and mechanics and made a career out of this natural love for cars.
Fernando moved to San Benito when he was in his early 20s. He continued to support a family as a mechanic and auto body specialist. Fernando’s favorite outing was naturally drag racing. He also loved to cook, have a great bbq with friends, and play a competitive ping pong match. Later in life, fishing became his favorite hobby, and that was where he seemed to be the most relaxed. In addition, Fernando enjoyed watching movies and taking the kids to the drive-thru when they were younger.
Fernando had some fun times, and many would say he was a little on the wild side or “free-spirited.” Most recently, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and became a born-again Christian. Fernando was a noticeably changed man.
Fernando is preceded in death by his parents, Fernando and Sara Lopez. His children survive him, Fernando Lopez Jr. (Cynthia), Sara Jones (Christopher), Toni Lopez, Michael David Lopez, and Nancy Lopez, siblings Angie Tingler (Randy), Mario Lopez, David Lopez, and Tencha Lopez, ten grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 9th, and Friday, September 10, from 10 am-9 pm, at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.
