With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Frank Ginez, a beloved husband, dedicated father, accomplished businessman, and respected community member. Frank was born on January 14, 1940, in Mexico and peacefully passed away on August 13, 2024, at McAllen Medical Center.
Frank's journey through life was defined by hard work, resilience, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Frank came to the United States as a child and grew up in Mercedes. From an early age, he was expected to help support the family and his younger siblings. Frank enjoyed school; however, in junior high, he took on a demanding job at the Airbase in Harlingen. When Frank was in his youth, he adopted "Lombardi time." He would ride his bike or hitchhike to Harlingen, waking up as early as 3 am to be at work at least fifteen minutes early or "on time." Needless to say, this work schedule needed to be more conducive to school, and being tasked with helping out the family's financial needs, Frank's decision was easy.
Despite leaving school in the 8th grade, Frank's work ethic and determination led him to a successful career and a prosperous life. After working his way up to the lead cook at the Airbase, Frank went to work flipping burgers at Whataburger. About this time, he married Rebecca Peña on May 7, 1961. The couple settled in Weslaco, where they raised their children and embraced their community.
Frank's career at Whataburger was in its early stages. It was only a short time before his work ethic, attention to detail, and business savvy earned him a promotion. Frank continued to climb the ladder and was eventually promoted to the prestigious title of district manager. Frank distinguished himself as a natural leader and consistently outperformed his college-educated peers nationwide. His exemplary performance earned him numerous awards, trips, and accolades during his tenure. One of his favorite awards was a trip to Hawaii, where he and his bride soaked in the beautiful scenery and enjoyed each other's company. Another favorite was a Rolex watch (only earned by the most elite leaders). Frank eventually retired after thirty years of dedication and commitment to Whataburger.
Frank was always wise regarding family finances, so he started a new business venture after retirement. Frank owned and operated Ginez Dandy Mart and Ginez Country Plaza alongside his beautiful wife, Rebecca. Frank and Rebecca's business thrived for over eighteen years. The Ginez family supported our local community, and we reciprocated. Many teams and children were sponsored throughout those years, and Ginez Dandy Mart and the Country Plaza will forever be remembered as early pioneers who invested in our city.
Frank found joy in sports in his leisure time, a passion that shaped much of his life. A gifted athlete, he excelled in semi-pro baseball, basketball, and football. Undoubtedly, Frank's favorite sport was basketball. Frank referred to himself as a "basketball-holic." Even while working at Whataburger, Frank started a company-wide basketball league. The Rio Grande Valley basketball team, "The Hustlers," would caravan to Corpus Christi for some friendly competition amongst peers. Eventually, Whataburger budgeted for a chartered bus because the league generated excitement and momentum. The "Hustlers" played basketball tournaments all over the Rio Grande Valley. By 1983, the "Hustlers" had compiled fifty-four trophies. Frank played competitive basketball until he was seventy-two years old.
Later, Frank continued playing sports, coaching aspiring athletes, and sponsoring youth programs. He was known in our area as "the living legend of basketball." Frank's guidance and mentorship were instrumental in the success of many young players who excelled at higher levels, including college and semi-pro.
Frank has been a season ticket holder for the Weslaco Panthers most of his life. He became a Wildcat season ticket holder when his grandchildren attended Weslaco East. Frank likely holds a record for the most loyal Weslaco sports spectator. When Frank's grandson Randy joined the South Texas College flag football team, Frank found another team he could cheer on. Randy won the national title for STC flag football, and Frank was elated.
Apart from local favorites, the Wildcats and the Panthers, Frank was a loyal fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, University of Texas Longhorns, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, San Antonio Spurs, and Dallas Mavericks.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Frank was known for his larger-than-life personality. A great storyteller with an exceptional memory, he captivated those around him with tales of wisdom and humor. His dedication and work ethic garnered the respect and admiration of colleagues and community members. At heart, Frank was a family man, cherishing his wife, whom he affectionately called "Princess," and caring for her with love and compassion during her battle with Alzheimer's.
Frank created bonds with many people throughout his life, including his pets. He was affectionately known as the "pet whisperer," owning birds and cats, all well-trained by Frank. He was able to make connections on many levels. Frank loved watching a good movie, especially if it was a true story or life lesson. He was a patriot and a businessman and enjoyed dining out with friends and family.
Frank is preceded in death by his grandmother, Cirila Rodriguez; parents, Pedro Sr. and Francisca Ginez; his sister, Marta Ginez; and his loving wife, Rebecca.
He is survived by his daughters, Martha Ginez and Sandy Ginez; son, Frank Ginez Jr. (Melinda); siblings, Belinda Ascencio (Joe), Pete Aguilar Jr., and Guadalupe Cavazos; grandchildren, Randy Ginez and Richard King Ginez (Steven), Frank Ginez III (Samantha Moran), Kyana Ginez, Michael Ginez (Mayra), and Joel Ginez, great-grandchildren, Frank Ginez IV and Sadie Rebecca Ginez, "adopted grandchildren", Bradley, Riley, and Patrick McCaleb, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the visitation on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at McCaleb Funeral Home, with a Holy Rosary at 7 pm. A mass will be celebrated on August 19, 2024, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, followed by burial at Highland Memorial Park.
The Ginez family would encourage all who attend Frank's celebration to wear a jersey from their favorite sports team.
Frank leaves a legacy of love, perseverance, and dedication that will continue inspiring all who knew him. May his memory be a blessing, and may he rest in peace.
