Weslaco- Gerald Edward Strauss, a devoted and compassionate individual, passed away on December 18, 2024, at McAllen Heart Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication. Born on June 16, 1934, in Corrunna, Michigan, Gerald lived a full life driven by his strong values, an unwavering commitment to helping others, and a desire to bring joy to those around him.
Gerald's education underpinned his values, and he was shaped by a Catholic school education emphasizing integrity and service. His life journey led him to serve in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1960, where he exemplified dedication and honor.
Gerald married his soulmate, Elizabeth Klco, in 1954. They raised six children together and taught them family values. The Strauss family night was a tradition that everyone looked forward to. The laughter and love shared during those occasions created priceless memories.
Professionally, Gerald made significant contributions to employment assistance, tirelessly working for the state of Michigan to help others find their paths in the workforce. He was also a passionate entrepreneur, operating Shapiro Automotive in Owosso, Michigan, for many years. His work was marked by his helpful nature and commitment to the community, positively impacting countless lives.
After Gerald retired, he and Elizabeth found a warmer climate in South Texas. It wasn’t long before they spent most of their time in the Rio Grande Valley. Later, their daughter followed, and they were able to make new friends who became a second family.
Gerald was a man of many interests and hobbies. He found joy in reading, gardening, and dancing and had a particular fondness for playing the accordion. His love for polka music often brought family and friends together, filling their hearts and homes with joy. Family nights, which Gerald considered one of his proudest accomplishments, created many cherished memories.
Gerald is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marcela (Thomas) Strauss, son Jeffrey Strauss, and siblings Leo Strauss, Robert Strauss, Nona Kall, Thelma Vreibal, and Dorothy Strauss.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Strauss; their children, Denise Strauss, Deborah Hutchinson (Thomas), Gregory Strauss (Kelly), Michelle Strauss, Andrew Strauss (Miguel); daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Strauss (Jeffrey+); siblings, Marilyn Conklin, Robert Strauss (Frances), Ronald Strauss (Judy), grandchildren, Stacie Collins, Brian Collins (Shannon), Nicole Moore, Danny Strauss, and Gerald Strauss, great-grandchildren, Ellis and Dillon Collins, Jack and Aiden Collins, Mila and Liam Moore, Dillon Ellis, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass celebrating Gerald's life will be held on December 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 109 S Illinois Ave, Weslaco, TX, 78596.
He is remembered as a dedicated, helpful, and compassionate man whose impact will be felt by all who know him. Gerald Edward Strauss leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories that testify to his life well-lived and the many lives he touched along the way.
