WESLACO – Gilberto Garza (Judge), lifelong mid valley resident passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.
Judge Garza was born in Weslaco in 1929 to Sotero and Herlinda Garza. Judge Garza answered the call to his country during WWII in the 1252nd combat battalion in the United States Army. Having served as a demolition specialist and saw combat in the France and Germany.
Upon honorable discharged in 1946 he returned to Weslaco and began his long career serving his fellow man. Once again in 1951 Judge Garza answered the call to his country and enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He returned to Weslaco and became involved in the jurisdiction procedure and attended UTPA, Texas A&M, as well as Southwest Texas State University Judicial Procedure Program. He was well known for his 18 years serving as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1, Place 2 in Weslaco and served as Municipal Court Judge for the City of Weslaco for 17 years. It was his generation that took part in changing political landscape of the area. He was a businessman and rancher for many years.
He was a member of the Lions Club, St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church and served as past director for the Weslaco Chambers of Commerce, Mexican American Chamber of Commerce, Red Coat Ambassador, Past Commander of American League Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8565 and served many years as Judge Advocate for the Catholic War Veteran Post 770 in Weslaco.
During his professional political career he treated everyone with respect and made every effort to see citizen’s concerns were handled in a fair manner. Judge Garza was admitted to Knapp Medical Center on Memorial Day with pneumonia, then diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis then had a heart attack then a stroke. He died Thursday at 5:25 pm surrounded by his family members.
He is survived by his wife, Anadelia Robles Garza, son Carlos J. Garza and grandchildren Nikki Garza Christian Van Der Graaff, and Ysabella Van Der Graaff and his son-in-law, Olivier Van Der Graaff. He is proceed in death by his father, Sotero Garza, his mother, Herlinda Ayala Garza, sister, Elida Garza Robles and his precious daughter Gilda Garza Van Der Graaff.
Visitation will begin today, June 29, 2014 from 4pm – 9pm with military honors to be conducted by VFW 747 Elsa at 7pm with a rosary at 7 pm. Ceremony guards will be posted by Jose L. Garza VCW Post 770 Weslaco. As requested by his family cremation will follow.
