Weslaco- Gilberto Velasquez, 90, was called to his eternal resting place with God on Thursday, May 30, 2019, at his home. Gilberto was born on January 1, 1929, to Feliciano Velasquez and Reyes Castellanos Velasquez. Gilberto was raised in Weslaco with his eight siblings. He worked for his parents as a truck driver when he was a young adult hauling fruit and vegetables up north. Gilberto eventually moved to South Bend, Indiana and met his future wife, Angelica. They enjoyed forty years of marriage. Gilberto worked for Studebaker for many years before moving to Illinois and then settling in Flint, Michigan where he and Angelica would raise their three children. Gilberto spent the next thirty years working his way through the ranks at General Motors. After Gilberto retired from General Motors in 1984, he and Angelica moved back to Weslaco. Unfortunately, the family lost Angelica in 1990. Luckily, Gilberto kept his faith and continued attending weekly mass at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, where he would eventually meet Angelina "Angie." They were married at St Joan of Arc, where Gilberto had also been baptized, in 1999 and spent the next twenty years together. Gilberto enjoyed landscaping and outdoor activities, like fishing, baseball, and barbeque. He enjoyed playing cards and pool with his friends. He also loved being spoiled by Angie's excellent cooking. Gilberto is preceded in death by his parents, Feliciano and Reyes Velasquez, his wife, Angelica, daughter in law, Lorie R Velasquez, step-son, Arturo Nieto, sisters, Ester Ochoa, and Lupita Alaniz, and brother, Jesus Velasquez.
