Weslaco: Guadalupe “Lupe” Gamez, 83, passed away on Tuesday, March 16th, 2021. On October 4, 1937, Lupe was born to Ignacio and Prudencia Gamez Torres in Thrall, Texas.
Lupe grew up in the mid-valley. He met his soulmate, Anita Abeldano, when they were teenagers and traveling north to work as migrants. The couple was married on February 27th, 1958, and they had five children. Lupe and Anita were a great team. They continued to work in agriculture traveling to Nebraska and Illinois yearly, sometimes with their children in tow.
Lupe was a hard worker and a great provider. He took care of his wife, children and always kept up with the family home. Lupe made sure the yard was cared for and kept busy evenings and weekends, spending countless hours working in the yard or working around the house. He could always find something to do. He maintained all of the family vehicles and was a talented mechanic.
Lupe was also a bit of an entrepreneur. He ran an RV and Carwash detailing service for the Winter Texans. This business thrived for over ten years.
When Lupe wasn’t working, he loved to listen to music. Many nights, the kids remember him playing his accordion and listening to his favorite bands.
Lupe taught his children to earn a living and good morals and values. He led by example and had a special way of keeping them all on the right track.
Lupe is preceded in death by his parents, Ignacio Sr. and Prudencia Gamez, son, Jose Gamez, daughter in law, Alicia Gamez, brothers, Francisco “Pancho” Gamez, Juan Gamez and his wife, Ramona, Tomas Gamez and his wife Josefina), and sister, Severra Gamez Sauceda.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 63 years, Anita, children, Elma Gamez Zamora (Eddie), Guadalupe “Lupe” Gamez Jr. (Alicia+), Jose “Joe” Gamez (Lucy), and Dahlia “Yaya” Gamez Rodriguez (Joe), grandchildren, Carlos Zamora, Michael Lee Zamora (Amanda), Denise Gamez, Pablo Gamez, Danielle Rae Gamez, Joseph Gamez, Alyssa Gamez, Yvonne Tristan (Chris), Kassie Rodriguez, Jennifer Rodriguez, and Lori Rodriguez, brothers, Natividad Gamez (Petra), Ignacio “Nacho” Gamez Jr. (Rita+), Daniel Gamez (Dolores+), and Jesus Gamez, brother-in-law, Demencio Sauceda (Severra Gamez Sauceda+), twenty great-grandchildren, numerous nephews, and nieces.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 18th, 3-9 pm, with a prayer service at 6 pm, at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco. A celebration of life will be Friday, March 19th, 10:30 am, at McCaleb Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes.
