Buddy’s academic journey reflected his brilliance and commitment to learning. He graduated from Pan American University with a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s in Education, beginning his career as a chemistry teacher in Mercedes, Texas. After eight years in education, Buddy chose to pursue a new path in pharmacy, following in his grandfather’s footsteps. He furthered his studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. During that time, Buddy met and fell in love with his soulmate, Terri Lee Rush of Fort Worth, also a student of Pharmacy at UT Austin.
Buddy began his career as a pharmacist in 1980, and in 1983, he and Terri married, forming a powerful team of pharmacists. Together, they founded the De La Rosa Pharmacy in 1986, which quickly became a cherished establishment in the community.
Known for his friendly demeanor, Buddy created a welcoming atmosphere where people came not only for their medical needs but also for heartfelt conversations. His generosity extended beyond the pharmacy, as he and Terri actively supported local sports teams and were passionate about fostering community spirit. After 33 years of dedicated service to the community and 40 years of service as a pharmacist, they closed the De La Rosa pharmacy in 2019, and Buddy officially retired as a pharmacist.

He had a passion for understanding and supporting various religious communities across the valley, exemplifying his respect and appreciation for diversity. His empathetic nature and big heart made him a beloved figure, always ready to lend a hand or a listening ear. Buddy’s acts of kindness ranged from sponsoring local athletes to buying barbecue tickets for fundraisers, always supporting the youth in our community.
A lifelong sports fanatic, Buddy proudly supported the Weslaco Panthers, holding season tickets and celebrating their victories. As a former defensive tackle for the Weslaco Panther football team, his loyalty extended to the Texas Longhorns, whom he avidly followed. Buddy supported youth sports, sponsoring and coaching numerous teams and young athletes. He also enjoyed promoting local boxers, shaping the lives of countless future leaders in Weslaco.
In addition to his dedicated work and community service, Buddy was a passionate golf enthusiast. He found joy in playing local courses, watching tournaments, and closely following the careers of his favorite golfers. Friends knew him for his love of The Matrix movies and his enjoyment of The Sopranos. Reflecting on his favorite valley cuisine, Buddy had a particular fondness for South Texas barbecue, popcorn, and fried chicken. He often dined at local favorites like Luby’s, Keno Cafe, Harold’s Country Kitchen, Milano’s, and Red Pepper’s, where he cherished many meals with loved ones.
Above all else, Buddy was a devoted father who loved his children more than anything. His pride and love for his family were evident in everything he did, from sharing life lessons to creating cherished memories. He was not only a father to his own children but also a father figure to many others, embodying guidance, strength, and unwavering support for those around him. His love and care extended far beyond his family, impacting countless young people in the community.
Family and friends were central to Buddy’s life. The De La Rosa home was often filled with barbecues, fireworks on New Year’s and the 4th of July, and close gatherings during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
