Alamo: Joan Dolores Dickey, 89, was reunited with her Lord and Savior and her husband, Ben Dickey, on Friday, October 21st, 2022. She was at her home in Alamo. Joan was born on August 24th, 1933, to Leo and Sara (Alonzo) Mendoza in Duluth, Minnesota.
Joan and Ben Ward Dickey met when they were children. They started dating as teenagers and spent the rest of their lives together. After being honorably discharged from the US Navy, Joan and Ben raised four children in St. Louis, Missouri. Joan was an excellent homemaker and a loving wife and mother. Joan’s family and friends will never forget her mouth-watering Mexican food.
Joan was a baseball fan and loved cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals, attending many games with her son. She also enjoyed shopping for antiques and had a knack for finding hidden treasures. Joan also enjoyed the Theatre and saw many productions at The Fabulous Fox in St. Louis. One of her favorites was Phantom of the Opera.
Joan had a unique tradition in her family. She took the role of flower girl at her oldest daughter’s wedding, a treasured part Joan repeated for numerous weddings in the Dickey family. Joan always remembered birthdays, and her cards included cash and a specific, but never the same, amount of coins. The children and grandchildren always enjoyed getting such a sweet card, and they could never figure out the random amount of coins.
Joan’s Catholic faith was apparent in her kindness, generosity, and work ethic.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Sara Mendoza, husband, Ben Ward Dickey, and siblings, Mary Mendoza, Henry Mendoza, Robert Mendoza, Peter Mendoza, Louis Mendoza, and Tony Mendoza.
She is survived by her children, Tina Carver (Gary), Michael Dickey (Karen), Sharmaine Boyd (Keith), and Ben Dickey (Lisa); sister, Alice Bradford (Walter+), Nicka Ruff, and Donny Mendoza; grandchildren, Kelsey Abinsay (Chris), Cody Carver (Amber), Kaitlyn Carver-Falls (Damian), Olivia Dickey, Manuel Dickey, Michael Boyd, Spencer Boyd, Sam Boyd, and Nicholas Boyd, and numerous beloved great-grandchildren.
