John (Jack) A. Cowden

MERCEDES - John A. (Jack) Cowden, 91, went home to our Lord Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born and raised in San Benito, Texas, but lived in Mercedes, Texas most of his life. Jack was a member of the 1942 Champion Greyhound team. He also served in the Navy in WW II and after the war, he played football at Texas A & I Kingsville. Up until his last 3 weeks, Jack was busy making "chore" lists for his grandsons, planning a garden project with his neighbor and scheduling a deer hunting trip. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Carol Jean Cowden. Jack is survived by his son, Art (Kathy) Cowden, three grandsons; Travis (Susan), Jason (Laura), and Nathan (Nancy) and five grandchildren (Aaron, Mariska, Jaxon, Carol Jean, and Bryce). Visitation will be held from on Friday, May 11, 2018, from 5:00-8:00 pm at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco, Texas.
