It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we bid farewell to a beloved son, father, grandfather, friend, and respected member of the community. Johnny Ray Walker passed away on April 5, 2024, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.
Johnny Ray Walker was born on July 2, 1944, in Weslaco, Texas, and led a life full of passion and joy. In 1965, he married his soulmate, Matilde "Tillie" Walker.
Johnny served his country with honor in the US Army during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, he and Tillie returned to their hometown, where they raised their son Jason and were active community members.
Johnny went to work for KRGV. His drive and ambition to learn perfectly matched the local news channel. Eventually, Johnny worked his way to become a production manager and dedicated forty-two years of service to the local community in broadcasting. Some of Johnny's closest friends were his colleagues, who were also his "second family." His commitment to KRGV was unwavering, from showcasing his barbecuing skills for his colleagues to working extended hours when needed.
Fishing, barbecuing, and cooking were just a few of the many things that brought him immense happiness. Johnny was a dedicated fan of NFL games and the Dallas Cowboys.
He shared a special bond with his true love, Tillie, and cherished every moment they spent together dancing. One of Johnny's greatest joys was listening to music from old rock bands of the 70s and artists like Ricky Skaggs, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Strait, and George Jones. He found solace in capturing precious family moments through photographs and recordings because preserving these memories meant everything to him.
As the stalwart "muscle" of the Walker III family, Johnny always strived to ensure their well-being.
Johnny Ray Walker will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and love that will forever echo in the hearts of those who loved him dearly.
Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, Adolf and Creola (Nunn) Walker, and his wife, "Tillie", brothers, Jimmy Walker, Bobby Walker, Eddie Walker, Buster Walker, Kenneth Walker, and Charlie Walker; and sister, Dixie Sanders.
He is survived by his son, Jason Walker (Desi); grandson, Major Storm "Stormy" Walker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services to honor and celebrate Johnny Ray Walker's life will be held on April 11. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco, followed by burial at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes at 1:00 PM.
