WESLACO - Jose Luis Cantú, 61, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2016 in Weslaco. He was born on March 30th, 1955 to Julian Cantú Jr., and Margarita Vela Cantú, one of fourteen children. Jose Luis graduated from high school in 1974 and immediately joined his father at Cantú's Painting, where he worked until 2016. Jose Luis continued his father's painting legacy, as they were known all over South Texas, painting residential and commercial properties locally and even on the King Ranch. Jose Luis was naturally talented and had a gift for color and decorating. He would often say that his work was not work, it was his "life" and it was his "art". Most of the people he worked for felt the same way. Jose Luis married his loving wife, Herlinda, on July 10th, 1986. They had a daughter, Sarah Ruby, and a son, Austin Joe. Jose Luis loved to cook and BBQ with family and friends. He also loved to hunt and fish. Jose Luis was very talented and always worked hard. He built his family their home, from the ground up. After all of that work, he did make room for his "man cave" so that he had a place for some well deserved rest and relaxation. He spent a lot of time in here watching his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, Jose is preceded in death by his parents, Julian Cantú Jr. and Margarita Vela Cantú. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Herlinda "Linda" Cantú. his daughter, Sarah Ruby Hernandez and her husband, David Hernandez, his son, Austin Joe Cantú, and his grandson, Cristian David Hernandez, his brothers and sisters, Julian Cantú III and wife Carmen, Mary A Colon Cruz and husband, Candido, Juanita Martinez and husband, Samuel, Esteban Cantú, Richard Cantú, and wife Margie, Lupe Cantú and wife, Dalia, Daniel Cantú and wife, Sandy, Roy Cantú and wife, Liza, Margaret Camargo and husband, Robert, Isabel DelaRosa and husband, Roy,Irene Ybarra and husband, Noe Rafael Cantú and wife, Margie, Robert Cantú and wife Shannon, and numerous nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 1-9pm at McCaleb Funeral Home, with a rosary at 7pm. Mass will be held on Friday, December 16th, at 10am, at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Highland Memorial Park.
