Jose Luis Chavez, Jr,

August 16, 1983 — February 15, 2023

Weslaco

Weslaco: Jose "Joe" Luis Chavez Jr., 39, passed away on Wednesday, February 15th, 2023, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Joe was born on August 16th, 1983, to Jose Luis Sr. and Sylvia Chavez in Weslaco, Texas.

Joe grew up in Weslaco and graduated from Weslaco High School. When Joe was a kid, he and his big sister Velma spent their afternoons with grandma Chavez watching cartoons. Joe's favorites were ThunderCats, He-Man, Darkwing Duck, and Ninja Turtles. Grandma would make her special "crunchies" (flour tortillas with beans toasted extra crispy). Afterward, they would end the day watching wrestling with grandma, which was priceless.

When Joe was a kid, he loved Ninja Turtles and GI Joe, so he started collecting them. Joe could spend countless hours playing with these figurines. Joe loved comics, and his favorite was Spawn, but Batman was a close second. He also had a great collection of baseball cards.

Joe was naturally artistic and could draw like no one else. He was also a great songwriter, which led to his passion for music.

Joe was a talented musician, and his favorite instrument was the guitar. Through the years, Joe became one of the best guitar players in the valley. He spent most evenings with his band family, which was extensive. Joe started playing with local bands as a teenager. He was passionate about music and people, a great combination. Because of Joe's passion and charisma, many musicians were born. The last two bands Joe played for were Bloodshot and Devioused.

Spectators gathered at local eateries and bars to see Joe and the band perform, but many became Joe's lifelong friends. Joe had a way of making everyone feel special. One reason is Joe just loved people, but he was also loving, caring, and generous. He was the first one to offer his services as a fundraiser if there was a need. Once a friend to Joe meant "always a friend." His relationships were lifelong, and Joe always made time to listen; hours would fly by or the entire night.

Joe’s daughters were his true love. But he had a huge heart, and he loved his parents, sister, nephews, extended family, and his closest friends, whom he called brothers, Israel, Homero, Alexis, Ian, and Dustin.

Joe is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Santos and Maria Bazan, his paternal grandparents, Federico and Margarita Chavez, and his mom, Sylvia Chavez.

He is survived by his daughters, whom he adored, Leola and Natalia Chavez; his father, Jose Luis Chavez Sr.; sister, Velma Lopez; nephews, Aaron Anthony and Adrian Lopez; great-nephews, Ayven Andrew and Ayden Anthony Lopez.

Visitation will be on Monday, February 20th, 10 am-9 pm, with a rosary/celebration of life at 7 pm. Cremation will be private.
