Weslaco: José René Luera, 73, passed away on April 20, 2022. On November 19, 1948, José René was born to Eduardo and Jacinta (Mata) Luera in Weslaco, Texas. He met his soulmate, San Juanita “Janie” Trevino while in high school in 1965 and soon thereafter René joined the US Army, serving our country during Vietnam. After his homecoming, René attended Pan American University. During René’s college days, he enjoyed playing the organ in a band, swimming, and tennis. Eventually, he and Janie reunited and were married. They raised two children, Reena and Rene Omar.
René continued to enjoy long swims in the ocean. He also loved to spend time hunting, motorcycle rides on his Harley and tending to his citrus grove. He was an entrepreneur at heart and was blessed to have married a great business partner. René and Janie made a great team. They managed a farm, a transport company and real estate investments. Janie was always by his side. He spent many weekends watching boxing and enjoying the company of life-long friends and family. René was most passionate about his country, being a loyal friend, honest in business, a loving father and taking care of the people he loved. He had a kind heart and was one of a kind.
René is preceded in death by his wife, Janie, his parents, Eduardo and Jacinta Luera, and his brother, Eduardo Luera Jr.
He is survived by his daughter, Reena Crawford (Mathew) of New Orleans, René Omar Luera of Edinburg (Carmen Monique Lopez), grandchildren, Oliver, Sebastian, and JonSky Crawford, Xanthiago Rene Luera, sisters, Lina Luera of Weslaco, Rosa Garza of Mercedes, and Elia Mora of Weslaco.
Visitation will be Friday, April 22, from 2-9 pm, with a rosary at 7 pm, at McCaleb Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 12 pm at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Weslaco. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park.
