WESLACO - Josefa “Pepa” Garza Leal, 74, returned to her heavenly home on Oct. 28th after a valiant battle with a long illness. Her love and dedication to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace. In her final days, her loving family and many friends surrounded her devotedly.
Pepa was born to the late Cosme and Eduarda Garza in Villa de Juarez, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. As a young woman, she came to live in Weslaco, Texas, where she met and married her life long partner, Jose S. Leal. The devoted couple was married for 58 years and raised their four children. She was a devoted parishioner of Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church and a member of the Altar Society.
A great woman of faith, Pepa was the heart of the Leal family, and shaped their spirituality and lives by her tireless Christian example, wisdom, and even her spontaneous sense of humor.
She is survived by her husband, Jose; her son, Rafael (Irene) Leal; her daughters, Nancy (George) Vela, Sofia (Timothy) McGrath, and Sylvia (Armando) Cardenas; and her fifteen grandchildren, Joel Javier “Joey”, Krystal Lauren “Kristy”, Veronica Andrea “Ronny”, and Marco Miguel Leal; Daniel Martinez Jr.; Anikah Lyzetth Vela; Josephine Alize “Allie” Grega Larson, Robert Joseph “Bobby”, Timothy Francis” Timmy”, Dorothy Grace, Michael Thomas “ Mikey”, and Simon Aloysius McGrath; and Armando Roel “Roey”, Briana Alyssa, and Aaron Jacob Cardenas. Also, included are her three great grandchildren: Justin Joel Leal, Alexiares Roel “Ale” Cardenas, and Charles Timothy “Charlie” Grega Larson.
Her parents, her sister, Herminia Leal, and brother Ricardo Garza precede her in death.
Pallbearers will be Marco Leal, Joel Leal, Robert McGrath, Joel Cardenas, Timothy McGrath, and Michael McGrath. Honorary Pallbearers are Simon McGrath, Aaron Cardenas and Justin Leal.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, October 29, 2015 from 4pm-9pm with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco. Funeral Mass will be on Friday, October 30, 2015, 10am at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 109 S. Illinois Ave in Weslaco, Texas. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Weslaco.
