Juan Ramon Soto Sr.

June 23, 1949 — December 23, 2024

Progreso/Weslaco-Juan Ramon Soto Sr., a loving husband and devoted father, passed away on December 23, 2024, at Knapp Medical Center. Born on June 23, 1949, in La Feria, Texas, Juan led a life filled with hard work, passionate interests, and an enduring love for family.

As a child and young adult, Juan worked as a migrant laborer alongside his family. He later moved to California, where he immersed himself in the agriculture industry. After returning home, he met Carmen Zepeda, whom he married in 1988. Their partnership flourished as they continued to work up north for half the year before settling down in Progreso full-time to raise their children.

Juan was known for his diligence and dedication throughout his life and career. He spent many years as a truck driver, showcasing his strong work ethic, and ultimately concluded his professional journey in the maintenance department at the Progreso School District.

In addition to being a hard worker, Juan was a strong man with a big heart. His caring nature and sociable personality drew people to him. He took great pleasure in attending his children's events, particularly enjoying their sporting activities. His grandchildren were also a source of joy; he cherished spending time outdoors with them, creating lasting memories.

Among Juan's greatest passions was baseball, a love that began in childhood. He played the sport for many years and dedicated much of his adult life to coaching young athletes. When he wasn't coaching or playing, he could be found watching baseball on television, fiercely supporting his favorite team, the Oakland A's. He brought his natural coordination and skills to crafting, finding joy in creating beautiful pieces.

Juan was a devout Christian and took pride in his faith, often participating in church activities, which reflected his commitment to his beliefs.

Juan is preceded in death by his parents, Ramon Soto and Dolores Villasana.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carmen; his children, Juan R. Soto Jr., Marisol Garcia (Jose), Guadalupe Rodriguez (Rosemarie), and Eulogio Rodriguez; his siblings, Juana Sanchez and Armando Villasana (Maria); grandchildren, Leonel Garcia, Giovanni Garcia, Montzerrat Garcia, Alitzel Garcia, Eli Rodriguez, and numerous nieces and nephews.
