Kathryn Louise Herold

October 20, 1925 — March 28, 2016

Mercedes-Kathryn Louise Herold, 90, passed away on Monday, March 28th, 2016. Kathryn was born on October 20th, 1925 to DJ Schwarz and Lillian Porter Schwarz in Mercedes, TX.

After high school she married Grady “Joe” Herold on April 17th, 1943, in Mercedes. She met her husband while he was serving at the Army Air Corp in Harlingen. They would have four boys, Grady, Darius, Larry and David.

Kathryn went to a small business school in Dallas and later she would thrive in the banking industry. She started as a bank secretary and 40 years later, she retired as the Vice-President of Hidalgo Bank in Mercedes. Kathryn was a great role model and she was a very hard worker. She taught this work ethic to her boys, working a paper route with her son Grady for a short time.

Kathryn was also a Christian woman and a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mercedes.

Kathryn volunteered, giving up her time for others. She spent a lot of time volunteering at the food pantry and was most known for this through her involvement with the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show where she served for many years.

Katherine was also an avid sports fan. She loved them all, football, basketball, baseball. Her favorites were the Houston Astros, the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs.

Above all else, Kathryn will most be remembered as a loving mom, grandmother and great grandmother. She would travel all over the country to watch her boys play football. She loved being a grandmother also and spent as much time as she could with the kids.

Kathryn is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Doris Shannon and Jimmie Wells, her son, Darius W Herold, and her husband of over 70 years, Grady “Joe” Herold.

She is survived by her sister, Peggy Birch of Spring, Texas, her sons, Grady F Herold Jr. and his wife Grace Ann of Katy, Texas, Larry W Herold and wife, Linda S. of Weslaco and David E Herold and wife, Carole A. of El Paso, Texas, her grandchildren, Merielle Boatman of McKinney, TX, Darius John Herold of San Antonio, TX, Betsy Pirotte of Katy, TX, Michael Herold of Cypress, TX, Carrie Pautsch of Mesa, AZ, Michelle Clark of El Paso, TX, Sean Herold of El Paso, TX, Jennifer Strawbridge of Houston, TX, and Blake Herold of Weslaco, TX, 12 great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 31st from 5-7pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 1st, at 10 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Mercedes, TX officiated by Esther Hughes.

Interment will follow at Ebony Grove in Mercedes.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Casa Grace Assisted Living Facility in La Feria, Erica, Rosa, and Mary for the loving care they provided and Delfina's help and care of Kathryn at home.
