Lorene Raleigh
Weslaco – L. Lorene Raleigh, 84 passed away peacefully on Friday, October 3, 2014. Lorene was born in Sand Springs, Oklahoma to Ernest and Mabel (McCray) Childers on August 29, 1930 and moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1935. Lorene was a true model of Christian charity and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. After attending Weslaco High School, Lorene was employed by KRGV-TV and KRGV-Radio for over 40 years as a bookkeeper and then moved to work for Rio Grande Canning in Donna, Texas. Although Lorene called Texas home, she and her family spent every summer visiting in Oklahoma at Keystone Dam, hence the nickname “Dam Lorene”.
Lorene was very active in the First Christian Church in Weslaco, Texas where she was a member for over 70 years. She held various offices in the CWF and had been secretary to the Church Board and served as a Deaconess. In addition, Lorene served as a Sunday school teacher and the youth group sponsor for many years. Lorene was also very active as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. In her spare time, Lorene was would create crafts for Vacation Bible School.
Lorene is preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Mabel Childers, husband Cecil (2005), son Gerald Lee (2014) and brother Richard Childers. She is survived by her sons Michael (Delia), David (Martha); grandchildren Mistie (Alan) Cobb, Justin (Cindy) Raleigh, Jason Raleigh, Chris Raleigh, Kevin (Becky) Raleigh; sister Mavis Ricketts; daughter-in-law Margaret Raleigh; and 4 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Justin, Jason, Chris and Kevin Raleigh and Alan Cobb.
Arrangements are under the direct of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco. www.mccalebfuneralhome.com. Graveside services will be held on Monday October 6, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco, Texas with Kevin Raleigh officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to The Aurora House in Weslaco, Texas, First Christian Church, Weslaco, Texas or The American Cancer Society.
