Weslaco- Magdaleno Castano Zavala, 94, passed away on January 1, 2014 at his residence in Weslaco surrounded by his family. He was born in Donna, TX on July 22, 1919 and was a resident of Weslaco. Throughout his life, he had lived in Chicago for over 40 years where he worked for Chicago Rawhide Co., Victor Comptometer Co. and the Art Institute of Chicago before retiring and moving to Weslaco. His parents were born in Guadalajara, Jalisco and San Luis Potosi, Mexico and settled in Donna. Magdaleno met and married his loving wife of 69 years, Maria J. Penilla Lozano in Monterrey, N.L., Mexico, who survives him.
Additional survivors include his children, Mary Lou (Juan D. Leal), Mary Esther (Carmelo Campos) and Christina E. (Wayne Eilers); grandchildren, John M. Leal, James N. Campos (Sylvia Mejia) and Clinton and Matthew Eilers; and great granddaughter, Valeria Campos. He was uncle to many nephews and nieces of the Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi and California. He was also a friend and compadre to many in Chicago.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Amado Castano and Higinia Zavala; and siblings, Julia (Alonso), Paula (Salinas), Conrada (De Leon), Amparo (Mata) and Panchita (Negron).
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 6, 2014 from 3pm to 9pm, with a rosary at 7pm at McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 2pm at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Val Verde Memorial Gardens in Donna. Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco.
