Manuel Martinez

December 26, 1975 — September 2, 2023

Mercedes

Mercedes-Manuel Martinez Jr. passed away on September 2, 2023, at Kindred Medical Center Houston after a courageous eight-year battle with heart disease. He was born on December 26, 1975, to Manuel Sr. and Guadalupe (Hernandez) Martinez in Mexico. The family moved to Progreso when Manuel was a child.

Manuel graduated from Progreso High School. He began his career working for Haggars in Weslaco for a few years. He then moved to work at the Progreso Co-op for a few more years. Later, he had the privilege of serving as a valued Hidalgo County Parks and Rec Maintenance Department member for the last decade. His dedication to his work was exemplary, and his colleagues and peers highly respected him.

While working for Hidalgo County, Manuel met Veronica Cabrera. They spent the next twelve years together.

Described as soft-spoken yet charismatic, Manuel never failed to leave a lasting impression on those he met. He had a warm smile that could light up any room. One of his most outstanding qualities was his unwavering support as a father to his children. He was kind-hearted, caring, and family-oriented, always putting the needs of his loved ones before his own.

In his spare time, Manuel enjoyed various hobbies and interests. He was a football fanatic with unwavering devotion to the Dallas Cowboys. Baseball was another passion, and Manuel rooted for the Houston Astros with unmatched enthusiasm. Cooking and BBQing brought him joy as he prepared delicious meals for family gatherings. An avid outdoorsman, fishing was one of his favorite pastimes. He also cherished spending time on the tractor—finding solace in working the land. Lastly, Manuel enjoyed eating out and trying different restaurants with his son Kristian.

Manuel's faith played an essential role; he was a devoted Catholic and led by example. He embodied the teachings and actively supported Danza Azteca San Juditas—a testament to his enduring faith and cultural heritage.

Manuel is preceded in death by his mom, Guadalupe Hernandez de Martinez, and his brother, George Martinez.

He is survived by his loving wife, Veronica Cabrera; his father, Manuel Martinez Sr.; his children, Krystal Palomino, Kristobal D. Palomino, Kristian M. Cabrera, Emily K. Martinez, Yeimi Y. Martinez, and Gabriella G. Martinez, and his brother, Arturo Martinez (Kassandra).
