WESLACO - Marcelino Casas Sr, 85, of Weslaco, passed away on January 19, 2016.
He was born on January 13, 1931 to Pedro Casas and Victoria Garza in Weslaco.
He graduated from Weslaco High School. Marcelino was a hard worker, he worked at Wells of Weslaco, where he would meet his future bride and soulmate, Argelia Castillo. She worked at Perry’s 5 and 10c store next door and it was love at first sight.
They were married on June 6th, 1954.
Marcelino attended Pan American University, where he earned his Bachelor Degree of Science and graduated in 1960. After graduation, he joined the United States Army, serving in the Korean War.
Upon returning from the Army he was employed by the US Postal Service and worked as a postman for the city of Weslaco and retired after 25 yrs. After his retirement from the Postal Service he worked as a substitute teacher for two years for Weslaco ISD.
At 55 years old Marcelino found that retirement did not suit him so he applied for the US Immigration Department, where he was sent to Glencoe, Georgia for training for six months and graduated at the top of his class. He was then offered a position in Georgia where kindly declined stating that his family was back in Weslaco. Over the next 17 years, he worked as an Immigration Officer working from the Port of Brownsville to Matamoros. He was the first officer to open what is now the Los Indios Port of Entry.
Marcelino was a religious man, he and his family attended and were members of St. Joan of Arc church, where he actively served as a board member and president. Marcelino was also a lector.
He was also a member of the Catholic War Veterans, Knights of Columbus and Optimus member. He was also a volunteer umpire for Weslaco Little League for 25 years.
His children fondly remember his favorite hobbies were “card night” and his Las Vegas trips with his compadrés.
Marcelino and Argelia had eight children. He is preceded in death by his son Marcelino Casas Jr. (Linda), they have seven living children, Marcia, Blanca Palomares (Juan), Joel, Melissa, Melva, Robert (Rina), and Daniel Moreno.
He leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren
Marcelino is also preceded in death by his sister Trinidad Garza.
Marcelino will be forever remembered, as great father, grandfather, uncle, friend and volunteer.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 20, 2016, 11:00 am - 9:00 pm & Thursday, January 21, 2016, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm at McCaleb Funeral Home, Weslaco, TX.
Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 21, 2016, 2:00 pm at St Joan of Arc Catholic Church with father Francisco Solis officiating.
Burial will take place at Highland Memorial Park.
Serving as pallbearers will be his brother in laws, Onesimo Castillo, Aaron Castillo, Alfredo Castillo, Manuel Castillo, Rene Castillo and Trinidad Castillo. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Rivera, Webster Ozuna, Commander Leo Hinojosa, Domingo Sepulveda, and Jose Leal.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Esmeralda Rodriguez CNA, Jessica Riojas LVN, and Linda Vaiz RN from Better Living Home Health and Dr. Robert Sepulveda and the staff of Rio Grande Regional Hospital.
