Margarito Martinez

Weslaco- Margarito Martinez, 80, passed away on Tuesday, June 9th, 2020, at DHR in Edinburg. Margarito was born on February 22, 1940, to Carlos Martinez and Tomasa Tijerina Martinez. Margarito grew up in Weslaco. He married Sulema Villarreal in 1960 and they raised four children together.

Margarito had a work ethic that was relentless. He worked in agriculture most of his life, handpicking cotton, watermelon, and canteloupe. He earned enough money to buy a dump truck and began a successful career in truck driving. Margarito seized every opportunity he could in order to provide a nice life for his family.

After many years of working long hours, being one of the first Hispanic families to build a brick home, and making sure his wife and kids were cared for, Margarito bought himself a race car. He loved detailing any car and if yours sat in his driveway long, Margarito was sure to start detailing it. He always kept himself busy, most of the time caring for others. Besides race cars, Margarito loved to barbecue and spend time with his children and grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father Carlos Martinez, wife, Sulema Martinez, brother, Carlos Martinez Jr., granddaughters, Crystal Marie Cavazos, Cristina Marie Cavazos, and great-granddaughter, Jalen Garcia.

Margarito is survived by his mom, Tomasa Martinez, daughters, Marylou Garcia (Johnny), Tommie Cavazos (Noe), Sylvia Martinez, son, Carlos Martinez, sisters, Susie Cantu (Fernando), Carmela Mendoza (Johnny), and brother, Jose Luis Martinez (Alicia), all from the Weslaco area, grandchildren, John Garcia, Sulema Garcia, Noe Cavazos III, Noel Cavazos, Margarita Martinez, Carlos Martinez, Montana Garcia, Destiny Longoria, Diana Longoria, Daphne Longoria, and Randy Martinez, great-grandchildren, Isaac Lopez Garcia, Tammy, Emmy, Macy, and Lexy Cervantes, Natalie, Nolan, Noah, Kristin, Levi, Noe IV, Thomas Noel, and Emilia Noele Cavazos, Maddison Cantu, Adelyn, Alice, and Logan Martinez, Ava Garcia, and Alayna Hernandez.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 14th, 1-9 pm, Monday, June 15th, 9 am-9 pm. A celebration of life will be Tuesday, June 16th, at 10 am, McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Weslaco City Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Johnny Garcia, Montana Garcia, Isaac Lopez Garcia, Noe Cavazos III, Noel Cavazos, and Carlos Martinez. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Lee Martinez, Nolan Cavazos, Noah Cavazos, and Thomas Noel Cavazos.
