Maria De La Garza

January 12, 1922 — May 29, 2020

Weslaco- Maria O De la Garza, 98, entered Heaven’s Kingdom on Friday, May 29, 2020. Maria was a wonderful sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, who lived life to the fullest. She was born on January 12, 1922, to Rosendo and Amada Gonzalez Olguin in La Puerta Ranch. Maria grew up in Rio Grande City until the age of 14 when the family moved to Weslaco. She was the oldest of nine children and was like a second mother to her siblings.

When she was twenty years old, she met her future husband and soulmate, Eugenio De la Garza. He was serving in the US Army, and it was love at first sight. The couple was married in 1943 at San Martin de Porres Weslaco, where they spent the rest of their lives. After retiring from the US Army, Eugenio and Maria would migrate up north during the summer. Maria was always willing to work to help provide for their nine children. Many will remember Maria from her numerous years at McManus Produce in Weslaco, where she spent most of her career.

Maria was known to be a loving and giving person. She enjoyed having everyone joining together on every occasion and cherished all of the wonderful memories. She loved calling her friends and family over the phone daily to catch up on any recent news. Maria also loved cooking and baking. For many years she worked, but still made time to make her delicious flour tortillas that everyone enjoyed. Her special Easter dish was Capirotada (Mexican Bread Pudding), and everyone always asked her to save them a piece. By far, the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will miss her famous homemade tamales that Maria made for every Holiday, which was enjoyed by all.
