Maria Elvira Duran passed away on July 11, 2020, at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen at the age of 72.
Maria was born in Valle Hermoso Tamaulipas, Mexico, to Vicenta Sermeño and Moises Martinez. She was the 2nd oldest of 6 children, and when her father Moises passed at a very young age, she was left with having to help her mother. Maria took care of her younger siblings while her mother worked to provide for them. She met and married Jose Duran when she was 16, and they had six children together. Maria became a widow at the young age of 42. She dedicated her life to her home and children. She worked hard until her retirement.
Maria was a loving mother and grandmother. Her home was the place everyone wanted to visit during the holidays. Everyone wanted a mom like her. Everyone loved her cooking, especially her tamales. You couldn’t eat a tamal and not compare it to Elvira’s. She loved her garden and taking care of her plants. She loved sitting on her porch, listening to her birds while having her coffee. She loved her coffee but was very particular about it. She loved her home and was always thinking up ways to change it up. She loved to dance cumbias. She didn’t miss a dance even with her bad knees. She still managed to feel well enough to go to the dance with her friends. She loved to spend time with friends and play lotería(Mexican bingo). She also loved her Casino time. She loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest. She will forever be remembered.
She was survived by her children Moises Duran(Evelia) Oscar Duran, Hector Duran, Norma Duran( Juan Carlos Olivares), Alfredo Duran, Elisabeth Duran, sister Martha Rocha, and brother Pablo Martinez, 21 grandchildren( Candy, Jose, Briana, Pedro, Oscar Jr, Rachel, Alfredo, Steffan, Jason, Christina, Diego, Pepe, Jazmarie, Isai, Juan Jr, Selena, Angel, Jesus Jr, Elexy, Charlotte, Armando, and 12 great-grandchildren.
