María Olivia Hernández, 94, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at her residence in Weslaco. María was born on April 14, 1928, to Manuel Gonzalez Vela and María De Los Angeles Gonzalez-Gonzalez in Sebastian, Texas. María lived in Nuevo Leon as a child. She married Faustino Hernández Mireles and moved to Weslaco, where they raised their children.
María and Faustino migrated to Wisconsin for many years. Even though María cared for nine children, she helped her husband with
the family income. María would wake up, and 4 am every day to prepare breakfast and lunch with homemade tortillas. She would
make her delicious meals and then work cleaning homes for many workers who lived in the McKay Nursery Waterloo. María loved
going to garage sales and finding hidden treasures when she had time off. She also loved music.
Even though María cleaned homes for income, she was an excellent homemaker and kept their family home immaculately clean.
After María and Faustino moved to the Rio Grande Valley, María enjoyed connecting with family and friends. She would talk on the phone for hours and made every effort to keep in touch with friends and family. María also loved working in her garden and
kept it nice and neat, just like her home.
María was a devout Catholic, and she prayed constantly. Her prayers were usually full of gratitude, and she thanked God for all His blessings and her children’s health.
María is preceded in death by her parents, Manuel Gonzalez Vela and María De Los Angeles Gonzalez; her husband,
Faustino Mireles Hernández; son, José Marin Hernández; siblings, Margarita Heredia, Hermelinda Esquivel Aristeo Gonzalez,
and Pedro Gonzalez, and grandsons, Gerardo Hernández and José J. Hernández Jr.
