WESLACO - Maria Julia Torres Luera, 88, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2020, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Julia was born in San Fco. Zaragoza, NL, Mexico on May 12, 1932, to Anastacio Torres and Blassita Lopez Torres. The family moved to Weslaco when Julia was a young teenager.
Julia married Florentino Torres, and they had four children together. After his untimely death in 1958, Maria remarried and had two more children. Maria worked for Dr. Don and Leanor Warden over thirty-five years as their nanny. The Warden's were like family to Maria and all of her children.
Julia loved gardening, sewing, and making crafts. She was also a great cook and loved to go out to eat. Her favorite spot was Luby's. Julia loved to go shopping, and she had a keen sense of fashion. She enjoyed getting spruced up and always wore jewelry and perfume. Most shopping ventures weren't complete without a stop at the Garden Center at Home Depot. Julia always added more plants to make her garden beautiful. Julia was quite knowledgeable as an herbalist and knew a great deal about natural remedies. She had a natural gift when it came to physical therapy and healed many of her friends and family throughout the years with natural holistic alternative medicine.
The most important thing in Julia's life was her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She read His word daily. Julia was a member of Iglesia Christiana Bethel for thirty-seven years, where she was very active and involved. Julia was a member of the United Pentecostal Ladies Conference Women’s Ministry. Julia was a missionary and went on numerous missions in Mexico. She was a Spiritual Warrior and a Prayer Intercessor, someone you needed on your side.
Julia was a wise woman. She was a great counselor and advisor. Julia was stern and didn't mince words, however always kind and loving. Julia was courageous and up for any challenge or project. She was a "take the bull by its horns" kind of woman.
Julia is preceded in death by her parents, Anastacio and Blassita Torres, husbands, Florentino Torres and Prudencio Luera, son, Juan Torres, and sisters, Aurelia and Celia Torres.
She is survived by her children, Connie Ceballos (Roberto), Anna T Sanchez (Noe), Teresita “Tere” Ceballos (Guadalupe), Mona Gasway, and Rosalinda Moreno, grandchildren, Rachel Lugo (Jonathan), Fr. Tino Torres, and Julio Torres (Ana), Richard Ceballos (Patricia) Robert Ceballos (Minerva), Marcos Ceballos (Elizabeth Jean), Almadelia Gonzalez (Robert), Julie Ann Ceballos (Sabio), Fabian Ceballos (Vicky) , Felix Sanchez (Flor), David Sanchez (Mercedes), Peter Sanchez (Cassandra), Christine Garcia (Julian), Asael Ceballos, Jose Ceballos (Elizabeth), Yadira Lopez (Jesse), Faustino Ceballos, Teresita Garcia (Eduardo), great-grandchildren, Jordan Torres, Jeremy and Jacob Torres, Gabriella and Gabriel, Alecxia, Connie, Robert Anthony, and Marcos Sebastian Ceballos, Robert, Brianna, Gianna, and Isabella Gonzalez, Fabian Isaiah Ceballos, Robert, Samantha Danielle, Selena, Sydney Rae, and Stephanie Sanchez, Angelica, and Noe David Sanchez, Jesus Ricardo, Rafael Jorge Garcia, Asael Jr, Ariel, Magdalena, Jamie Lee, Joey III, Caitlin, Eli, Adamaris, Jesse Jr, Aleydi, Eduardo Jr, Carolina, Sebastian, great-great grandchildren, Sophie, Serenity Ramon and Sadie, Ace III.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 17th, 3-9 pm, with a prayer service at 7 pm at McCaleb Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be Friday, September 18, at 10 am. Pastor Miguel Escamilla will officiate all services. Burial will follow at Weslaco City Cemetery.
