Melberto “Mel” Ortiz Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law, brother and uncle passed away on March 6, 2025 at DHR in Edinburg, Texas. He was born November 5, 1956 to Jose and Virginia (Ansciso) Ortiz in Mercedes, Texas. Mel lived a life filled with dedication and love.

Mel was a distinguished entrepreneur and skilled draftsman. Renowned for his expertise in estimation and his invaluable support to clients across diverse contracting and financing projects. His sharp, intelligence, coupled with a respectful and approachable demeanor earned him deep respect and admiration within his professional community.

Mel was a multifaceted individual whose talents and passions shaped every aspect of his life. Beyond his professional achievements, Mel was a man of deep personal joys. He loved restoring old cars, fishing, playing poker and was also a devout fan of the Denver Broncos. Most of all he cherished his time with his grandchildren and family. His protective nature and dedication made him a steadfast provider and a beloved figure among those closest to him.

Mel’s devotion extended his role as a husband, standing by his wife, Helen Closner since their teenage years. Together they shared a love for music and dancing, especially to the timeless sounds of the 70’s. Their moments on the dance floor were filled with joy and became cherished memories, reflecting the deep bond they nurtured throughout their life together.

Mel’s educational journey began at Weslaco High School, where he built the foundation for an extraordinary life. He continued his education at the University of Indiana in Cocomo. His character was defined by qualities that made him truly remarkable, respectful, protective and deeply devoted to his family. These traits shaped not only personal relationships but also his professional path, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Melberto is preceded in death by his parents Jose and Virginia Ortiz, sister Josefa Ortiz, his in laws Delia and Daniel Rios, brother in law Homer Closner and sister in law Mary Linda Closner.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helen, his daughter Delia Ann Ortiz Gonzalez(Luis); sons, Mel Ortiz Jr.(Alma), Max Ortiz, Mark Ortiz(Ashley), and Michael Ortiz. Grandchildren: Mel Ortiz III(Shayla), Louie Gonzalez, Helen Castillo(Alex), Leon Gonzalez, Olivia Ortiz, Haley Rodriguez(Kevin), Matthew Ortiz and Mark Ortiz Jr. Great-grandchildren: Marcos Ortiz, Korey Gonzalez, Mikael Ortiz, Aayden Ortiz, Khalany Rodiguez and Ellie Castillo. His siblings, Joe Ortiz(Dalia), Rene Ortiz(Lupe), Adan Ortiz(Anna), Eva Castillo, Manuela Garcia, Christina Donis. Brother and Sister In laws: Oliver Closner(Socorro), Angie Closner(Homer+), Oscar Closner(Elva), Nancy Rios Lopez(Martin) and Alma Barroso(Daniel) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held in his honor at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco, Texas on March 13, 2025 from 11:00am until 9:00pm, with a Holy Rosary at 7:00pm. A Mass celebrating his life will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Weslaco, Texas at 10:00 am.

Melberto “Mel” Ortiz Sr. will be remembered not only for his career contributions, but more importantly for the love and warmth he brought to the lives of those around him. His legacy will continue through the cherished memories shared by friends and family.
