Mrs. Mirta Laurentina Barrera passed away June 2, 2019, in Weslaco, Texas. Mirta was born July 17, 1934, in Hebbronville, Texas to Cruz and Alejandra Alaniz. She graduated from Hebbronville High School in 1955. In October of 1956, she married her husband Guillermo Roel Barrera. They were married for 50 years. As newlyweds, they moved to Harlingen where they raised 3 children. She was a member of the St. Anthony's Church Altar Society and was a teachers aide with Harlingen CISD. Her husband's job with U.S. Customs moved the family to El Paso, Texas in 1974 where they welcomed the 4th child to the family. Her family returned to Weslaco, Texas in 1980. Mirta was a Eucharistic Minister with St. Pius X Catholic Church and a substitute teacher with WISD for many years. She is survived by sons Guillermo V. Barrera, Luis A. Barrera, daughters Patricia E. Barrera Aguirre ( Rene Aguirre) Veronica L. Barrera Cuellar( Chris Cuellar) grandson Shane M. Zertuche ( Ketzaly Zertuche) and great-grandchildren Anabel Q. Zertuche, Guillermo G. Zertuche, and sisters-in-law Beatriz B. Gonzales (Robert R. Gonzales ). She is also survived by sisters Dora Garza of Corpus Christi, Tomasita Gonzales of Rio Grande City, Rosario Garcia of Poteet, and a brother Diego Alaniz of Corpus Christi. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 4th, from 3-9pm, with a rosary at 7 pm at McCaleb Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 5th, 10 am, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Hebbronville, TX. Burial will follow at Barrera-Gonzalez Ranch Cemetery in Duvall County, TX. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Aurora House in Weslaco.
