WESLACO - Nell Griffin Dargel, 95, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2014, at John Knox Village, Personal Care. She was born in Mobile, Alabama February 11, 1919. Her family moved to Weslaco when she was about six years old. She married Russel Dargel in 1943, who preceded her in death four years ago.
Mrs. Dargel taught school for 36 years, beginning at the age of 19 with an emergency certification, before finishing her Education degree from Baylor University in 1951. She taught Sunday School even longer than that—first at First Baptist Church in Donna, then at First Baptist Church in Weslaco where she had worshipped as a child.
One of Mrs. Dargel’s favorite Bible verses was “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.”—Proverbs 3:5,6. Such a path was an example of her faith to her friends, students, and loved ones.
Nell Dargel is survived by her brother, Dr. John Griffin of Port Lavaca, her son, Russel Dargel, Jr. of Weslaco, daughters Debra Morton of McAllen, and Mary Jo Pickett of Mesquite. She leaves six grandchildren: Corey Dargel, Aaron Dargel, Megan Rhoden, Christopher Pickett, Bethany Crawford, and Caitlin Barrick. She also leaves five great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2014. The funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday morning at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating the service will be Dr. Steve Parker, pastor of First Baptist Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Donna City Cemetery, Donna, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. (Alz.org—Donate to Nell Dargel’s Tribute Fund)
