Pablo G Peña

February 14, 1937 — September 10, 2016

Weslaco- Pablo G. Peña, 79, passed away on Saturday, September 10th, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He is now reunited with the love of his life, Eva, who passed away in 2012. He was born in Weslaco, Texas to Salomon Peña and Olivia Garcia Peña. He had a sister, America, and a brother, Salomon. Pablo graduated from Weslaco High School in 1957. During high school, he met the love of his life, Eva, at a Methodist youth gathering. They were high school sweethearts and would marry on June 23rd, 1957, shortly after graduation. He played in the high school band and his band director was Mayor Gene Braught, who he greatly admired, so much, that he named his first born son after him. Pablo Pena became the first Hispanic mayor in 1971 at the age of 34. Mayor Pablo Peña would serve Weslaco and its citizens from 1971-1975. During his tenure, some of his accomplishments included acquiring grants for the development of the City Park on North Airport, completing the Weslaco Industrial Park, where he was instrumental in bringing in Haggar Slacks to Weslaco. In 1975, he helped make the Boy's Club a reality. Mayor Pablo Peña was an integral part in the success of Weslaco and his dedication and hard work will always be remembered. The city named the Airport Park in his honor on December 20th, 2014, which is now the Mayor Pablo G Peña Park. When Gene Braught retired, Pablo encouraged him to run for mayor, which was another success for the city of Weslaco. Pablo Peña is the founder of Weslaco's, Central Plumbing and Electric Supply in April 1964. He was ahead of his time and received many awards in the plumbing and retail industry. Central Plumbing is still a thriving business in the mid valley, where all three sons and three grandsons still work. He and Eva would have three boys, Gene, David, and Pablo. They traveled to Colorado over the years many times. When he wasn't working or running the city, he loved to play the slots in Vegas and Louisiana. He also had a ranch, where he spent many weekends hunting. Pablo was also a Dallas Cowboy fan. He is preceded in death by his parents, Salomon and Olivia Peña, his wife, Eva Peña, and his brother, Salomon Peña, Jr. He is survived by his sons, Gene Paul and wife, Nori, David Dale, and Pablo G., Jr. and wife, Melissa, his grandchildren, David N., Gene Jr., Jeffrey, Richard, Jonathon, Megan, Kassandra, Ryan, and Kaylie, his great-grandchildren, Ava, Kaylen, Avery, Nolan Paul, and Jaxson, sister, America P (Dan) Silva sister in law, Margarita Peña, numerous nephews and nieces.
