Peggy Green Finney, 74, passed away peacefully in Weslaco, Texas on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family providing love and care at the time of her death.
Peggy was born July 17, 1940 in Scottsboro, Alabama. As a child she enjoyed playing in the woods surrounding her home with her twin brother, Phil. She and Phil were the youngest of 7 siblings. She participated in the Flag Corps of the Scottsboro High School Band and enjoyed traveling about with her classmates.
In 1960 Peggy married John Wiley Finney, Jr. They had a son, John, and in 1964 they moved to Laredo, Texas where Wiley began his career with the United States Customs Service. In 1977 Wiley transferred to Progreso, Texas. The family lived in Weslaco and Peggy and Wiley remained there after retirement.
Peggy loved to cook and take care of other people. She was involved in the Delta Literary Club, serving as an officer in various positions. She began her volunteer service with the Knapp Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in 1980 and continued that service until illness forced her to remain at home. She served as an officer and was implemental in providing scholarships to the Knapp Nursing Program and advanced education for hospital employees. She also worked for many years at Harvest Night, a fund raiser for the hospital.
She was very active in her church, Central Christian Fellowship in Weslaco, and always had a special treat for her young friends there.
Peggy never met a stranger, and made friends with whoever was around her. She always made sure that her family, friends and acquaintances felt loved, cared for and appreciated.
She was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings. She is survived by her husband Wiley, son and daughter-in-law John and Vanessa Finney of San Angelo, Texas and grandchildren John Cody Cardenas and Taylor Finney, also of San Angelo. She is also survived by numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and many, many friends all across the country.
The family wishes to thank Knapp Medical Center Hospice, the Knapp Medical Center Oncology Staff and all of Peggy’s special friends who provided care, love and support during her illness. She’s playing in the woods with Phil again, and waiting for the rest of us to catch up so we can sit, drink a cup of coffee, and talk.
