WESLACO - Petra H. Leal passed away on Saturday, March 18th, 2017 in Weslaco. Petra was born on January 12, 1934, to Esteban and Carmen Hurtado in San Benito, Texas. She was one of thirteen children, so she grew up in a big family. When she grew up, she proceeded to have a large family of her own. Petra mostly raised her children on her own, working as much as she could in the service industry. She was a hard worker and would do as much as she could to provide for her children, from working as a housekeeper to working in the fields. When Petra was done with work, she certainly was great at getting dressed up and putting on her make up. It was rare to see her without her makeup and jewelry. Petra loved to play bingo and chalupa and really enjoyed adult daycare where she was very well loved and had many friends. She also enjoyed watching her novelas. She also enjoyed collecting a few crosses and rosaries. Petra is preceded in death by her parents, her son, Francisco Hernandez, her brothers, Jose Hurtado, Nacho Hurtado and Refugio Hurtado, and her sister, Juanita Hernandez and Irene Hernandez. She is survived by her children, Ernesto Hernandez Jr. (Jenny) of Michigan, Annie Hernandez May (David) of Willis, Texas, Graciela Hernandez Cavazos (Arturo) of Houston, Texas, Carmen Hernandez (Lupe) of Harlingen, Texas, Pablo Leal (Mary) of San Antonio, Guillermo Leal (Belinda) of Weslaco, Texas, Esperanza Linda Villarreal of Fresno, California, and Marcos Leal of Weslaco, Texas, siblings, Julia DeLeon of California, Lazaro Hurtado, Mauro Hurtado, Miguel Hurtado, Carmen Cantu, Esteban Hurtado Jr., Jesus Hurtado, all of Harlingen, Texas, and Antonia Cardoza of Weslaco, Texas, 33 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. Petra will always be remembered as a beautiful, strong, courageous woman who loved her children and grandchildren with all of her heart.
