San Juan- Phyllis Jean Kuby Moore, 67, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend entered into the glory of her eternal life on Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at her home surrounded by family.
Phyllis was born on December 16, 1945, in Chickasha, Oklahoma to William P. Kuby and Doris Kuby after which they moved to the PSJA area. She graduated from PSJA High School in 1964 and then attended North Texas State in Denton, TX. She then moved to Austin, TX to work for the district attorney for Travis County. It was here that she adopted her second family---Tex and Betty Aulds. Phyllis returned to the valley and started her next career in the cotton industry. She worked at Rio Vista Gin in Alamo, Texas before moving on to Progreso Coop Gin where she eventually became manager. She was the first woman in the valley to hold that position in a cotton facility.
She married Malcolm W. Moore of Weslaco, Texas on December 27, 1969. She and Malcolm have 4 daughters--- Katherine, Kelly, Kimberly, and Kristy. As soon as the girls were able to sit a horse, Phyllis was off to the races, literally. She became very involved in several youth rodeo and barrel racing associations. This is where she adopted her third family—the rodeo family. The Texas Youth Rodeo Association (TYRA), Texas High School Rodeo Association (THSRA), and Future Farmers of America (FFA) are associations that she dedicated a lot of her time when her girls were young. She held several offices in THSRA and in TYRA. Even after having the girls compete in these riding events, Phyllis would haul them to Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Posse Arena in Edinburg—Rio Round Up—to ride again, sometimes even the same night. She helped coordinate the Magic Valley Rodeo Association. She was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and National Barrel Horse Association. Once the girls were grown and there was room in the trailer, she, herself, was able to start riding in competition.
Phyllis was working on her next group of cowboys and herself when Alzheimer’s struck. To be able to ride was one of her greatest joys, besides, spending time with her family and friends. She will be long remembered for her huge smile and her huge personality. She will be greatly missed by her friends, but never forgotten.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of almost 44 years, Malcolm W. Moore; daughters , Kelly Moore, Katherine (Josh) Sheeran, Kimberly (Chip) Kerby, and Kristy (Christopher) Nelson; and five grandsons, Seth and Kyle Sheeran, Trace and Keeton Kerby and JW Nelson; three sisters, Mary Kuby, Pat (Delbert) Coy, and Michaelene Kuby; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Doris Kuby.
The family would like to thank the CIMA Hospice Care for their kind and compassionate care of our loved one, Phyllis Moore. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and/ or the American Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers.
Family will be receiving friends today, Friday, November 8, 2013 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.
