WESLACO - Rita Bernadette "Bunny" d'Hemecourt, 92, passed away on Tuesday, March 15th at her home in Weslaco. Bunny was the 7th and youngest child born to Martin and Margaret Sheridan Harrigan. She was born on a farm in Chateaugay and had 2 brothers, Martin and Joseph and four sisters, Ann, Harriet, Margaret, and Marie. Bunny went to a 3 room schoolhouse near the farm for grade school where she was taught by her sister. She then attended Ursuline Academy in Malone, New York, where salutatorian and first in her class. She could remember going to church from the farm in the winter time with a horse and sleigh. Bunny would meet her soul-mate, George Jr. while they were working at GE in Schenectady, New York. They would marry in New York, where George was teaching. Bunny and George would live in many places. They lived in Troy, New York, where they would start their family, having their first son George III. Later they moved to Kingsville where George would teach at A&I University. Their next home was in New Orleans, where they would have Andre. Next was Austin, where their third son Pierre was born. Bunny and George then moved back to the valley and had Martin in Mercedes. After living for a short while in Baltimore, they spent most of their adult years in Baltimore, living in Bethesda, Maryland where George worked as an electrical engineer and Rita stayed home and raised the four boys. Mr. D'Hemcourt brought her down to the valley to retire where they were well known as one of the nicest couples in the mid valley.
Bunny is survived by her loving husband, George Jr., sons, George III D'Hemecourt and wife Vicki of Dallas, Dr. Andre D'Hemecourt and wife Donna of New Hampshire, Dr. Pierre D'Hemecourt and wife Nancy, of Boston, Martin D'Hemecourt and wife Susan, of Boston, grandchildren, Michelle, Kirstin, Michael, George IV, Gregory, Nicholas, Charles, Lia and Duncan, and two great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Michael, numerous nephews and nieces, cousins and two sisters in law, Margie and Mary.
Family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent in her memory to the Ursuline Sisters, 1338 North Ave, New Rochell, New York, 10804-2121.
A memorial mass will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11am on Saturday, March 19th, officiated by Father Eduardo Ortega.
