Robert Daniel Reed, recently diagnosed with cancer, died at his home in Weslaco on Monday, November 7, 2022, with his beloved wife, Maureen, at his side. He was 85 years old. Robert was born on October 29, 1937, in Mercedes, Texas, to Fay and Valdo Reed, who predeceased him. Robert grew up in Donna, where he graduated from high school. While he was in high school, Robert was very active in all things related to agriculture. He was always proud that his lamb was selected as the Grand Champion at the very first Donna Lamb Show.
After graduating from Donna High School, Robert went straight to work at Weslaco Motor and Implement, where he worked for 25 years. After he left Weslaco Motor, Robert and Maureen moved to Carrizo Springs, Texas, where he managed H & J Farms for seven years. He always said that working on the farm was his favorite job; Robert loved farming. They returned to Weslaco, and Robert then went to work at El Centro International for many years before finding employment at Barbee-Neuhaus Implement Company. After retiring from Barbee-Neuhaus, Robert enjoyed working at the family ranch in McCook and just “puttering” around and being a handyman to all his neighbors.
Robert was a member of the National Guard for nine years and was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961.
Robert is survived by Maureen, his loving wife of 63 years, and his sons, James (Suzanne) of Orange, Texas, and Donald (Susan) of Bay City, Texas. He is also survived by five grandchildren: T.J. Reed, Chance (Chelsea) Reed, Melissa (Josh) Trim of Orange, Texas, Kimberlee Reed of Corpus Christi, Kaylee Reed of Robstown, and by four great-grandchildren. In addition, Robert is survived by his brother Glenn Reed of Wyoming, and his sister Christine Arnold of Wichita Falls, Texas.
Robert’s request for graveside service only is being honored and will occur on Saturday, November 12, at 11:00 at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Robert’s memory can be made to Aurora House, P.O. Box 976, Weslaco, Texas 78596.
